Has anyone tried to take the electronics and mechanical setup from a
mouse or trackball and use it for encoding shaft (motor) motion?  It
seems like a pretty cheap solution that could provide a simple serial
interface to the computer.  Since the mouse's electronics buffer the
pulses, I would think it would prevent loss of motion.  If it works,
it would provide two-axis encoding for under $30.
