To accumulate recyclables in the workspace, all SCS
offices and labs should have a recycling container
(blue plastic wastebasket-sized can, one per room).
It is up to individuals to transport recyclables
from their workspaces to the collection sites on
        each corridor or floor.

Paper
Both the old procedure and the new procedure involve two paper
recycling streams; the new procedure redefines the streams.

        High-Quality Stream

                laser printer output
		copier output
		plain paper fax output

        Low-Quality Stream

                white/colored paper
                white/colored envelopes w/windows
                booklets/manuals
                fax/telex copy paper
                adding machine tape
                carbonless forms
                self-adhesive notes/envelopes (including Post-Its)
                soft-covered books w/white pages
                greeting cards
                manilla folders
                tab/time cards
		ruled paper
		paper with color logos
		paper with gummed labels
                glossy materials
                magazines, phone books, newspapers
		Outer package for copy paper

Note: Metal staples and paper clips do not have to be removed (for
either stream), although paper clips can be reused.

        Trash Stream (-$X per ton)

paper with food waste on it
                styrofoam or plastic items
                napkins, paper towels
                candy wrappers
                waxed items: cups, plates
                lunch or grocery bags
                brown/golden envelopes
                pizza boxes
                carbon papers
                hard-covered books
                binders
                photographic and blueprint papers
		transparencies
		tablet backs

Trash in a recycle box can cause tons of
recyclables to be rejected by the recycler.

The high-quality stream will be collected in cardboard boxes
at the collection sites; the low-quality paper will be collected
in large plastic barrels at the collection sites.

Cans
The procedure for recycling beverage cans will change only in that
there will be many more collection sites throughout SCS facilities.
Both aluminum and bimetal are acceptable. All cans are to be placed
in plastic containers at the collection sites. BEVERAGE CANS ONLY!

Cardboard
Currently corrugated cardboard is collected, compacted, and thrown
away. In the near future, it will be recycled. In either case, the
procedure is to flatten the carton and leave it in the hall outside
your office. Make sure you remove any non-cardboard packing material
        such as styrofoam "peanuts".

Glass
Glass recycling will continue as is, supported by an individual
within SCS -- the campus-wide program does not support glass yet.
