GREAT NEWS!!!
The university is now going to be collecting plastic and glass for recycling!

Until now, SCS has been recycling glass and plastic on its own, but now
the custodial staff will be taking care of it on a univeristy-wide basis.

This means that Will Marrero, our current SCS bottle recycler, can
hang his bottle cap up and retire with our deepest appreciation.
Thanks are also due to John Mount, recycler emeritus, and especially
to Dave Redish, president and founding member of the SCS Recycling
Club, and one of its best customers.

What does all of this mean to you? Well, the most obvious change you
will see is that there is now one receptacle for all types of beverage
containers - no separation is needed. Also, the containers should get
emptied by ABM once or twice a week. No mess, no fuss.

Paper recycling is the same as it ever was.

The new recycling procedures (included below) can be found in:
/../g/usr/recycle/info/recycling_procedures or
/afs/cs/project/recycle/recycling_procedures

The locations of the recycling barrels will be listed in a post to follow.

Please send any questions or comments to recycle@cs.
Thank you for recycling.

To accumulate recyclables in the workspace, all SCS
offices and labs should have a recycling container
(blue plastic wastebasket-sized can, one per room).
It is up to individuals to transport recyclables
from their workspaces to the collection sites on
        each corridor or floor.

Paper
There are two paper recycling streams, high and low quality.
The high-quality stream will be collected in cardboard boxes
at the collection sites; the low-quality paper will be collected
in large plastic barrels at the collection sites.

        High-Quality Stream

                laser printer output
		copier output
		plain paper fax output

        Low-Quality Stream

                white/colored paper
                white/colored envelopes (plastic windows ok)
                booklets/manuals
                fax/telex copy paper
                adding machine tape
                carbonless forms
                self-adhesive notes/envelopes (including Post-Its)
                soft-covered books w/white pages
                greeting cards
                manilla folders
                tab/time cards
		ruled paper
		paper with color logos
		paper with gummed labels
                glossy materials
                magazines, phone books, newspapers
		Outer package for copy paper

Note: Metal staples and paper clips do not have to be removed (for
either stream), although paper clips should be reused.

Trash - DO NOT PLACE IN RECYCLE BINS!

paper with food waste on it
                styrofoam or plastic items
                napkins, paper towels
                candy wrappers
                waxed items: cups, plates
                lunch or grocery bags
                brown/golden envelopes
                pizza boxes
                carbon papers
                hard-covered books
                binders
                photographic and blueprint papers
		transparencies
		tablet backs

Trash in a recycle box can cause tons of
recyclables to be rejected by the recycler.

Beverage Containers

All beverage containers - cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles,
are now being recycled together on a university-wide basis. Please
empty all beverage containers before placing them in the receptacle.

     Cans
The procedure for recycling beverage cans will change only in that
they are now collected together with glass and plastic.
Both aluminum and bimetal are acceptable. BEVERAGE CANS ONLY!
Please empty the can before disposing.

    Plastic
Plastic containers of type PETE and HPDE can be recycled. These will
be marked with a triangular recyling logo on the bottom of the
container. If the number inside the triangle is "1" or "2", then it
may be recycled; containers with any other number should be thrown
into the trash. Please empty the bottle and remove the cap.

The categories of plastic indicated by the numbers are:

1 Polyethylene Terephthalate (liter sized soda bottles)
2 High-Density Polyethylene (milk jugs, shampoo bottles, condiment bottles)
        3 Vinyl
        4 Low-Density Polyethylene
        5 Polypropylene
        6 Polystyrene
        7 Other

    Glass
Glass bottles are now recyclables along with cans and plastic.
Simply place them in any recycling receptacle for beverage
containers, taking care to empty the bottle and remove the lid.

Cardboard
Flatten the carton and leave it in the hall outside your office.
Make sure you remove any non-cardboard packing material such as
        styrofoam "peanuts".
