SCS will join in the campus-wide recycling effort as of April 1.
This will be an expansion of the current SCS recycling procedures,
increasing the number of recyclable items and providing more
collection sites within SCS facilities. The campus-wide recyling
program supports paper, cans, and (in the near future) corrugated
cardboard. Glass recycling will continue to be supported by an
individual within SCS. For now, the campus-wide program is limited to
SCS spaces within Wean/DH/F&MRB. Other departments that are located
in these buildings will be incorporated in the near future.

        This post provides:

        1. Old and new recycling procedures.
        2. Introduction to the SCS Recycling Liaison service.
        3. A list of collection sites within SCS facilities.

The new recycling program will increase the number of collection
sites within the buildings. It is still up to individuals to
transport recylables from their workspaces to these collection sites.
Each office or lab area within SCS will receive a recyling container
(plastic wastebasket-sized can, one per room) to accumulate
        recyclables in the workspace.

Paper

Both the old procedure and the new procedure involve two paper
recycling streams; the new procedure redefines the streams.

        High-Quality Stream ($20 per ton)

                laser printer and copier output

        Low-Quality Stream ($5 per ton)

                white/colored paper
                white/colored envelopes w/windows
                booklets/manuals
                fax/telex copy paper
                adding machine tape
                carbonless forms
                self-adhesive notes/envelopes
                soft-covered books w/white pages
                greeting cards
                manilla folders
                tab/time cards

Note: Metal staples and paper clips do not have
to be removed, although paper clips can
                      be reused.

        Trash Stream (-$X per ton)

                glossy materials
                magazines, phone books, newspapers
paper with food waste on it
                styrofoam or plastic items
                napkins, paper towels
                candy wrappers
                waxed items: cups, plates
                lunch or grocery bags
                brown/golden envelopes
                pizza boxes
                carbon papers
                hard-covered books
                binders
                photographic and blueprint papers

Trash in a recycle box can cause tons of
recyclables to be rejected by the recycler.

The high-quality stream will be collected in cardboard boxes
at the collection sites; the low-quality paper will be collected
in large plastic barrels at the collection sites.

Cans
The procedure for recycling beverage cans will change only in that
there will be many more collection sites throughout SCS facilities.
Both aluminum and bimetal are acceptable. All cans are to be placed
in plastic containers at the collection sites. BEVERAGE CANS ONLY!

Cardboard

Currently corrugated cardboard is collected, compacted, and thrown
away. In the near future, it will be recycled. In either case, the
procedure is to flatten the carton and leave it in the hall outside
your office. Make sure you remove any non-cardboard packing material
        such as styrofoam "peanuts".

Glass

Glass recycling will continue as is, supported by an individual
within SCS -- the campus-wide program does not support glass yet.

The SCS Recycling Liaison is actually a group of four people
who are the SCS interface to the CMU Recycling Coordinator.
The SCS Recycling Liaison's functions are:

                1. Post recycling information updates
                2. Maintain this information in /../g/usr/recycle/info
                3. Answer recycling questions

The Recycling Liaison has several other day jobs, and asks that
all questions are posed via email to recycle@cs. You will receive
        a response within one week.
