Our initial post caused several SCS personnel to raise questions about the
new recycling procedures. This post summarizes the questions and answers
that are of general interest.

Plain fax paper *is* recyclable in the High-Quality stream. (This is output
from fax machines that use ordinary copier paper.) If you aren't sure if a
particular type of paper is recyclable, ask us via email (recycle@cs). We
might ask you to bring us a sample.
---

Yes, Post-Its are recyclable in the Low-Quality stream.
---

In case it was not clear in the previous post, staples and paper clips are OK
in *both* the Low- and High-Quality paper streams. (Paper clips should be
reused.)

Here's one question we received about campus junk mail:

    >And what can we do to put pressure on university dining and other
    >departments that insist on "junk mailing" everyone in the university? I
    >don't care about the Faculty Club's menu [I don't belong, and now that
    >they "enforce" membership, they should bombard their members only, if at
    >all], nor do I care who was promoted to associate secretary to the
    >assistant administrator of bureaucratic business.

Eliminating unwanted/senseless mass mailings is one of the goals of the
Recycling Liaison. You can contact the source of the mail and ask them
to take you off their mailing list.

Here's another question we received concerning recyled paper usage
in SCS:

    >I'd also like to see the SCS use recyclED paper. Some of it is of
    >extraordinary quality. The cheap stuff looks yellow, but for internal
    >use, it would be fine. I don't have enough leverage to make the ITC use
    >it, and we don't buy in large enough quantity. But, if we could get the
    >SCS or the university to buy it in bulk, we could get excellent prices.

Recycled paper is now available from University Printing and Publications.
The Recycling Liaison will be discussing its use with SCS paper buyers in
the near future.

One letter writer suggested a software method for eliminating a lot of paper
waste in SCS Land:

    >Finally, let's investigate PostScript previewers. If they're available
    >enough (we don't all have NeXT machines), and good enough (DEC's
    >dxpsview isn't), we may be able to save a lot of "test prints".

Yes, this is a good idea -- we are looking into it. If anyone out their has a
favorite, we'd like to hear about it.
---

What about the friction-feed or sprocket-feed paper used by some printers?

Good question. This type of paper, which actually constitutes a third paper
recycling stream here at CMU, is used more extensively by other departments
than it is by SCS. Our biggest user is the SCS Facilities staff. So we will
set aside a public recycling point for this paper in the third floor printing
room.
