We have now finished distributing recycling containers to about
half of all CS/RI offices and labs. We expect to complete the job
within the next 24 hours.

During our initial distribution effort on Wednesday, it became
clear that many CS/RI personnel still don't understand how the
CMU recycling system works, despite our attempts to cover all the
details in previous postings. So here's another attempt, based on
the five questions we answered most often:

WHAT IS THIS THING? -- It's a blue, wastebasket-sized container which
CS and RI purchased for your use. It is meant to aid you in the
gathering of recyclable materials in your workspace.

WHAT DO I PUT IN IT? -- Low-quality paper. You should continue
to stack high-quality paper (i.e. plain white printer/copier/fax
paper) in paper boxes.

WHAT IS LOW-QUALITY PAPER? -- White envelopes with or without
windows, colored envelopes with or without windows (except golden
brown envelopes), booklets, manuals (with spiral backs removed),
Telex copy paper, adding machine tape, carbonless forms, Post-Its,
soft-cover books with white pages, greeting cards, manila folders,
telephone message forms, and time cards. For more information, see
/../g/usr/recycle/info/recycling_procedures.

WILL SOMEONE COME AROUND AND EMPTY IT? -- No, the University was
unsuccessful in getting its housekeeping contractor, American Building
Maintenance, to gather recyclables as part of its current contract. This
means office and lab occupants will be responsible for carrying their
small blue containers, their paper boxes, and their cans and bottles
to the central collection points we have set up on each floor and/or
corridor. A Physical Plant laborer will empty those central containers
once a week. See /../g/usr/recycle/info/collection_sites for more
information.

WHERE SHOULD I PUT EACH TYPE OF PAPER AT THE COLLECTION SITE? -- Dump
the contents of your blue container into the blue barrel marked "mixed
paper only". If you have using a paper box to collect high-quality paper,
then you have two choices. You can either dump its contents into one
of the cardboard boxes already at the collection site, or you can simply
place it next to those other boxes and go get another empty box for your
office or lab.

We hope the preceding answers your questions. If not, send us some
mail and we will give it another shot.
