OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Jason Kidd took over the game, and once again a new team will take over the No. 1 ranking. Kidd had 18 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and 12 assists, leading California to an 85-70 upset of top-ranked UCLA on Sunday. The Bruins, the last undefeated team in Division I who escaped with a 69-65 win at Stanford on Thursday night, never led during the game and shot just 38 percent. George Zidek's free throw with 4:41 left pulled UCLA to 70-68, but he couldn't convert the second foul shot, and the Golden Bears outscored the Bruins 15-2 the rest of the way. UCLA went scoreless for more than four minutes down the stretch. Kidd scored nine of Cal's last 11 points. Monty Buckley led the Bears with 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting and Lamond Murray added 21. Leading 45-35 at halftime, Buckley scored 11 of Cal's first 13 points of the second half, giving the Bears a 58-43 advantage with 15:08 to play. UCLA outscored Cal 11-2 to cut its deficit to six points with 11:22 remaining. A free throw by Tyus Edney got the Bruins within 64-63 with 7:36 remaining, but he missed one to tie it. Ed O'Bannon's 24 points led the Bruins. Cal used the zone to hold the Bruins to 40 percent shooting in the first half and built 29-16 lead on a 3-pointer by Anwar McQueen with 9:19 to go in the period. UCLA answered with a 10-0 run started by two consecutive three-point plays by O'Bannon. A 3-pointer by Charles O'Bannon with 3:00 remaining in the half cut Cal's lead to 36-33, but Murray sparked a 9-2 spurt for the Bears. Murray got a slam dunk and stole a pass at the other end that Randy Duck turned into a breakaway layup. Murray capped the spurt with a one-handed jam to give Cal a 45-35 lead at halftime. The Bruins started off slowly, falling behind 7-0, and couldn't find their shooting touch from long range. UCLA was most successful getting the ball inside to 6-foot-8 Ed O'Bannon, who had 12 first-half points, or 7-foot Zidek, who had eight, but Cal's switch to the zone stymied the Bruins' inside game.
