SAN ANTONIO (UPI) -- Dave Barr threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns and linebacker Jerrott Willard returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown Friday inght as California routed Iowa, 37-3, in the inaugural Alomo Bowl. Barr, who ranked second nationally in passing efficiency, completed 21 of 28 passes in slightly more than three quarters. The Bears never trailed in handing the Hawkeyes their worst loss in 13 bowl appearances. Doug Brien kicked three field goals before Barr tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Mike Caldwell with six seconds left before halftime, giving California a 16-0 lead. On Iowa's first play following the kickoff, Willard, a linebacker who also had six tackles and three sacks, stepped in front of a Paul Burmeister pass over the middle and sped up the right sideline as time expired for a 23-0 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Barr found Iheanyl Uwaezuoke over the middle with a 34-yard catch-and-run for a 30-3 lead. Barr completed his performance with a 12-yard scoring toss to Brian Remington with 7:59 left. The Bears, making their first bowl appearance under second-year coach Keith Gilbertson, finished their season 9-4. The Hawkeyes dropped to 6-6 on the season and 6-6-1 all-time in bowl games.
