CAL'S EDWARDS STEADIES STUMBLING BEARS 9/24/94 By DENNIS GEORGATOS Associated Press BERKELEY, Calif. -- For Tyrone Edwards, one scoring run led to another. Both of Edwards' touchdowns came in the fourth quarter as California rallied past Arizona State 25-21 Saturday for its first win of the season. Down 21-11, Cal (1-2, 1-0 Pac-10) got within striking distance on Edwards' 1-yard touchdown run with 7:29 remaining and went ahead on his 8-yard sweep with 2:03 remaining to gain the victory in its conference opener. ''After that first touchdown, you could just tell we could run the ball,'' Edwards said. ''When the defense got the ball back for us, we all said, 'We could do this again.' '' James Stallworth set up Cal's winning drive with his interception of a Jake Plummer pass, returning it 2 yards to the Cal 40-yard line. Dave Barr took over from there, leading the Golden Bears 60 yards in seven plays. His 30-yard completion to Sean Bullard advanced the ball to the 18, and two plays later, Edwards took a pitchout and swept around the right side for the score. ''I turned the corner and there was nothing but daylight. I had to get in,'' Edwards said. ''This win means everything,'' added Barr. ''I can't imagine what another week would have been like if we would have lost.'' Arizona State (1-3, 1-1 Pac-10) got the ball back with two minutes remaining but its last-ditch drive ended in Brandon Whiting's fourth-down sack of Plummer. Regan Upshaw had sacked Plummer on the previous play. ''We guaranteed (the Cal offense) if they scored after the interception we'd stop them. Everyone lived up to their word,'' Stallworth said. The Sun Devils quarterback finished 14-of-24 for 224 yards with a pair of touchdowns to Keith Poole. He had one interception. Chris Hopkins led all rushers with 118 yards on 25 carries. None of that was enough to prevent Sun Devils coach Bruce Snyder's first loss to the Bears in three games since leaving as Cal's coach in 1992. ''When you have two evenly matched teams, you have a chance to win it. It's a game we could have won, certainly,'' Snyder said. ''Cal's like us. They're very well coached. Keith (Gilbertson, Cal's coach) is doing a good job. I think we both have some good young talent. I know a lot of those (Cal) guys and they are really terrific players. ''We are playing a lot of young guys. I just told the team I'd go use that as an excuse if they wanted me to. They didn't want to do that.'' Barr completed 27 of 34 throws for 254 yards and a touchdown with one interception. Edwards had 71 yards on 15 carries. Plummer's second scoring pass to Poole, an 11 yarder, completed a third-quarter drive that began with a Cal turnover. Shawn Swayda stripped the ball from Reynard Rutherford at the end of a run and free safety Eddie Cade recovered the fumble at the Sun Devils' 45. Plummer's third-down pass to Matt Nelson gained 14 yards to the Cal 28. Two runs by Hopkins netted 17 yards before Plummer hooked up with Poole for the score and a 10-point margin with 10:36 remaining in the third quarter. The Sun Devils drove to the Cal 13 late in the third quarter but Hopkins' halfback option pass was intercepted in the end zone by Ricky Spears. A subsequent Cal drive was thwarted in the same manner when Cade came up with an end zone interception. Arizona State scored two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 14-11 halftime lead. Hopkins broke loose on the first play of the second quarter for a 35-yard scoring run. Plummer and Poole then teamed up for a 66-yard touchdown pass to the Sun Devils up 14-3 with 6:27 left in the second quarter. Poole gathered in Plummer's throw at the Cal 45, slipped out of cornerback Kevin Devine's grasp and ran the rest of the way untouched for the touchdown. Cal regrouped, putting together a six-play, 64-yard drive that ended when Barr lofted a 29-yard TD pass to Fred Sims. The Bears opened the scoring on Ryan Longwell's 29-yard field goal midway through the first quarter.
