   Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (Prof. B. Faltings)
   is looking for a

Research Assistant

   for developing intelligent product configuration systems.

Subject:

   In future electronic commerce environments, salespeople will 
   need to be replaced by computer programs which can respond 
   in real-time to queries posted through a network. The main task 
   of these programs will be product configuration, i.e. to 
   propose to the customer a suitable combination of parts 
   along with a price quote. This task involves a combination
   of many artificial intelligence techniques, including
   constraint programming, terminological reasoning, case-based
   reasoning, and machine learning.

Background:

  * Master's degree or equivalent in computer science

  * background in Artificial Intelligence, in particular 
       constraint programming and description logics

  * programming ability

  * knowledge of French would be an asset

The position offers:

  * application of advanced technology to real problems in
       collaboration with industrial partners
 
  * a University environment with the possibility 
       to take classes in other subjects

  * the possibility to earn a doctorate in Computer Science

  * a salary of at least SFr. 50'000/year (appr. US$ 40'000)

  * a 1-year renewable contract
