I agree with the other poster that a mail-list would be more appropriate
and would also allow more people to listen in (or participate in) the
discussion as not all sites get the alt.* newsgroups. For example, my
employeer carries ALL sci.* and comp.* newsgroups, but will not carry
alt.* newsgroups - even if they are sci, or comp, based (there are a few
exceptions, but they require managerial approval).  For this reason, any
alt.* articles will be unreachable to me (and possibly many others).

BTW, I am hoping to make it to Toronto this year for the Beam robot olympics -
does anyone have any specifics about the event (dates, places to stay, 
approximate cost while in Toronto, etc)?
