Subject: US-ME Tenure Track CS Faculty Position U. Maine

            TENURE TRACK POSITION IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
                       University of Maine

QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related
discipline is required. Candidates should have a strong interest
in both graduate/undergraduate teaching and scholarly research.
Preference will be given to candidates with a primary interest in
Artificial Intelligence, but those with an interest in Language
Theory and Practice, Systems (e.g., Operating Systems,
Networking, Machine Architecture), or Database System will also
be considered. Candidates are expected to have a broad computer
science background, and to complement and support both the
graduate/undergraduate curricula and the research activities of
the faculty. Current areas of faculty research interest include
algorithms and complexity theory, software engineering and
software reuse, graphics, numerical methods, database systems,
and operating systems and networking. In addition, major projects
on campus include global climate change and geographic
information systems.

RANK: Appointment is expected to be at the Assistant Professor
level effective Sept. 1, 1995.

RESPONSIBILITIES: A normal course load is two courses per
semester in computer science at the undergraduate and/or graduate
levels. In addition it is expected that a new faculty member
participate in department service activities and establish a
research program that includes both independent and collaborative
research, support from external funding agencies, and involvement
of graduate/undergraduate students through thesis and/or project
work.

COMPUTING FACILITIES: The department has a multivendor workstation/PC
network, including SUN4s under UNIX, SGIs, and assorted PCs and MACs
in three different laboratories.  This network has access to the
University mainframe (IBM 3090) with vector attachment, online library
system, and the Internet.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary and benefits are competitive.
Opportunities exist for released time and summer research
support. Fringe benefits include health insurance, life
insurance, and retirement (TIAA-CREF), and spouse or dependents
are eligible for a 50% tuition waiver as full-time students.

DEPARTMENT: The department has eight other members, and offers
BA, BS and MS degrees in Computer Science.

CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY: The University of Maine is the Land Grant
University and Sea Grant College of Maine. The 3200 acre campus
is located ten miles north of Bangor in the center of the state.
It is one hour from the beautiful Bar Harbor area and the same
distance to skiing and remote hiking areas. UM has a student
population of approximately 11,001 (including approximately 2300
graduate students) and a faculty of 690.
