Harry,

I've gotten quite a few folks who've responded to my plea for a good
place for my canine pal, and thought you might like to hear about them
too. In addition to the places below, Satya recommended the Merlyn
Kennels, which he liked quite a bit. Unfortunately, they don't take
dogs over 25 lbs, and our Samoyed is at least double that.

We ended up taking him with us, since it was Labor Day weekend and
everyone was booked. When we have time to make the reservations, we
use the Golden Bone down on 5th Ave just the other side of Penn.
They've got nice rooms the dog can stay in, with TV (which he and we
could care less about) and two (or three if you pay extra) walks per
day. We plan on using the Cozy Inn though whenever we're heading
East. We may even start using their limo service if we'll be gone for
a while; they seemed to have the most enthusiastic support.

Thanks,
-brian

Brian,

The rec for Cozy Inn in Bovik is probably mine, but if it isn't, I'll second
it, and add that they also have some kind of shuttle service now, where they
pick up and return your dog. I haven't used it; don't know how much it costs.

Of course, they're probably booked for this weekend, too.(In fact, you may
find that pretty much everyplace is booked, since it is Labor Day weekend).
Earlier this summer,I ran into this (Cozy Inn being booked), so I went and
visited two other kennels. The first was Misty Pines, off the Wexford exit of
79. They sounded good on paper, and it seems like a nice, clean place. But the
dogs don't stay in runs, they stay in crates and go out in runs twice a
day. They'll do "nature walks", but you pay extra. I just couldn't see my dogs
being very happy there.

The other place I looked at was (Parkway Kennels or Airport Kennels; I can't
remember for sure, but I think I have the card laying around home somewhere,
or you could check with Gary Pelton), out by the airport, near Charlie Brown's
parking. They were recommended to me by Bonnie John. It was more like a
typical kennel, and again you pay extra for play time or walks, but it seemed
clean, I liked the people, and the dogs had more space (reasonable-sized
runs).

What I actually ended up doing was taking my dogs with me and putting them in
a kennel in Rochester. That way, we could take the dogs out and run them
ourselves. My dogs don't mind riding in the car, so it wasn't much of a
problem.

Another thing you might consider is using an in-home pet service. I'm starting
to lean toward trying this in the future with my dogs (since I'm moving in
January, and I don't think I'm going to find another Cozy Inn :-(.

If you get any good recommendations for other places, could you pass them on?
I'm likely to need a kennel a few more times while we look for houses and
stuff.

Good luck,

Amy

We've used the kennel up on Red Mud Hollow road (just north of the Mt Nebo
exit from I-79N) and been real happy with them. I can't think of their name
though -- the old owner passed on, and the new folks are really quite good.
So we've used them under both owners over the past 9 years.

Brian,

The Cozy Inn is excellent! And, they do have a limo that will come
to pick up your dog in a pinch... ;-)

I think Bonnie & Gary use kennel out by the airport.

Brian --

The dog-sitter that I mentioned when I saw you this afternoon is
Paul Goldberg. He lives in Greenfield and boards dogs at his house.
He charges a bit more than a kennel ($16/day), but the dogs get the
run of a yard and the house instead of a cage, and he takes them out
to the park for exercise every day. He's great with dogs and seems to
really like them. Before he will take a dog, however, you have to
bring the dog over to spend the day (no-charge) so that he can make
sure the dog will work out in that setting.

We've been very happy with the way he cares for our dog when we're
away. His number is 421-8312. You can tell him that I recommended
him, if you like to do that sort of thing.
