While I'm at it, here are our (mine and Todd's) experiences with area vets. First, a gripe about Point Breeze Animal Hospital. We took our first dog there for a while when she was a puppy. At one point she wasn't eating well, and we called the hospital up to see if there was anything we could do. The tech we talked to said that we should bring her in -- they would put her on an IV, keep her overnight, and by the way Dr. Gerson wouldn't be in until the next day. Get real. To their credit, when we later talked to Dr. Krupnik (now Dr. Dougherty) she said she would straighten things out with this particular tech. Now we take our dogs to Bakerstown Animal Hospital on Rte. 8, 443-8200. They're *way* north of town, past turnpike exit #4. But I think they're worth it. Dr. Reed is willing to spend extra time with you to answer questions. The techs are very professional. I've never had problems getting appointments on short notice when necessary. And, conveniently, they take credit cards. I've also taken one of my dogs to Dr. Lynch in Monroeville. Dr. Reed referred us, as this dog was having an eye problem and he (Dr. Reed) wanted to make sure his diagnosis was correct. I was there twice, and both times I had to wait about 45 minutes (even though I had an appointment), and spent a total of about 5 minutes each time with Dr. Lynch. While I don't doubt he's a good vet, he did seem rather rushed. On the other had, I have several friends ("in dogs") who use Lynch as their regular vet and they think he's great. They are located on Baum Blvd., next door to the Kentucky Fried Chicken and across the street from Mervis Motors, I believe. Their phone number is 681-9295. The Clinic is run by Dr. Thomas Wiles, who I have found to be not only an excellent vet, but a wonderful human being as well. I cannot recommend him highly enough. One of my cats contracted a fatal disease several years ago, and Dr. Wiles was compassionate and professional throughout the entire ordeal. He really took a personal interest in my cat in an effort to diagnose and then treat her. The clinic treats dogs and cats. They may treat other animals too, but I have never seen anything except a dog or cat when I've been there. Their name is a bit of a misnomer; they do much more than just routine spay and vaccination procedures. The prices are surprisingly low, as well. The only disadvantages to the place are that: 1) they accept cash only, which is sometimes a pain, and 2) even though you make an appointment ahead of time, it is rare not to have to wait at least a half hour once you show up. Point (2) is probably somewhat a function of the fact that Dr. Wiles doesn't hesitate to spend extra time with you, answering any questions or addressing any concerns you might have. - Allan ------- Return-Path: Received: from ius4.ius.cs.cmu.edu by B.GP.CS.CMU.EDU id aa16045; 3 Jul 91 8:53:43 EDT Date: Wed, 3 Jul 91 08:51:52 EDT From: Bill.Ross@IUS4.IUS.CS.CMU.EDU To: lily@B.GP.CS.CMU.EDU Subject: Vets Status: RO Oops -- I also sent this to the CS-guide account but... I have a 3 year old German Shepherd. I would reccomend strongly against the Greenfield Vet. Hospital, (Dr. Babik). I had a rather unpleasant experience with him. He is this very authoritarian old guy who will not discuss anything with you in a reasonable way. His attitude is "I'm the doctor, you're not, you will do what I tell you with your pet. Don't ask any questions because, since you're not a doctor, you wouldn't understand the answers anyway". I had some Xrays taken of my dog there. When I asked if I could have the Xrays, he said: "No, by state law the Xrays belong to me". I have since discovered that there is no such law and that I am are entitled to all my pet's records. I haven't resolved this yet, but he did lie to me. I remember there was a lot of info there when I looking for a vet for my cat. I myself submitted some people's recommendations for vets in the North Hills, but probably that's not relevant for the guide since most students will live in the city. Here in the city I had my cat spayed at Pittsburgh Spay and Vaccination Clinic (nicknamed "Spay 'n Vac"). They had an arrangement with Animal Friends to do low cost spaying if you adopted from Animal Friends. --Carol ------- Return-Path: Received: from ius4.ius.cs.cmu.edu by B.GP.CS.CMU.EDU id aa16875; 3 Jul 91 9:54:20 EDT Date: Wed, 3 Jul 1991 09:35-EDT From: Douglas.Reece@IUS4.IUS.CS.CMU.EDU To: lily@B.GP.CS.CMU.EDU Subject: Re: Guide: veterinarians Message-Id: <678548150/dreece@IUS4.IUS.CS.CMU.EDU> In-Reply-To: CMU-CS.Guide.to.Living.in.Pgh's bboard message of 02-Jul-91 16:10 Status: RO We have a mixed-breed dog that we take to Dr. Timothy Tucker in Penn Hills. We can also confirm that the Rosedale Kennels (listed in the phone book as the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania) in Verona are OK. While I'm at it: we try to mail order our dog supplies from R.C. Steele. They require a minimum order of $50, but charge about 40% less than list for everything you could imagine for dogs. (I'll see if I can get their phone number.) Locally, we go to Cooper's pet supply at Verona & Frankstown Rds. They are so nice they offered to return our money if our dog didn't like the toy we bought there. Here's my opinion, if you still want it, of the Cat Clinic: Wonderful place. I have three cats, two males and a female, and I've been taking them there since they were kittens. All three were spayed/neutered there. The cost at the time was about 36$ for a neutering with the cats coming home on the same day, and 70$ for spaying, because of the overnight stay. I can't recommend this place highly enough. The doctors and nurses/attendents always are willing to take the time to answer any questions you have on everything from side effects of the medicines, "my kitten hasn't eaten all weekend, what do I do now (the answer was 'feed him something he likes', with a demonstration put on by the vet and my kitten about what he liked...)", and "how do I clip their claws (again, with a demonstration)" to "how much will that be" and "who can I contact when I can't reach you". They also carry a full line of cat "stuff": carriers of all sorts, cat food, over-the-counter medications like hairball medicine and flea dip, IAMs and Science diet, scratching posts, etc. By the way, the Cat Clinic has two locations: the Clinic and Hospital on Liberty Ave in Bloomfield, which is opened every day (I think), and a clinic on Rt 51 that is opened Monday and Wednesday evenings. I like the one on 51, because the examination rooms are bigger. Appointments can be made at both clinics for either clinic. By the way, you probably want to get comments on Castle Shannon Veterinary Hospital, which has a 24 hour emergency clinic. toodles, gretchen
