this isn't miles; this is a friend (ad0r@t*). For car audio systems, many
people feel that Blaupunkt (a German company) makes the best. They do,
of course, tend to be expensive. I don't like Pioneer products
in general, but their car systems seem good, especially their tuners.
If you are going the cassette route, I suggest that you spend the money
to get a better system, since the transports on many of the cheaper
car systems tend to be flaky, especially with the kind of bouncing and
jerking inherent with such an environment. The effects of this could
range from just wobbly sound to stretched or broken tapes. If you are
going to be leaving tapes in the car, think of the heat that tends to
build up in cars over the summer, and the cold in the winter. Many
people have found tapes melted in their cars. Loran makes tapes that
are designed not to have their shells melt, and not freeze. They are
reasonably good tapes, and can be found in a number of places. Iink
sony makes similar tapes; but I'm not sure.

Digital tuning is *most definitely* worth it, especially in a bouncy
environment like a car where analog tuning tends to drift. I wouldn't

even buy a home system with analog tuning.

this has all been quite general. If you want clarification or further
info on anything, send me mail on t*.

If you want only the best quality and are willing to pay in the medium
to upper price range for car stereo then I suggest to get an Alpine.
I spent several years in a business repairing stereos and found that
Alpine was by far the most reliable and best built (not to mention best
sounding). Name brands that are pure poop include Sanyo, Craig and
Pioneer.

Hi,

There is an interesting article in consumer reports earlier this year
that explains about car stereos (it's more complicated than I thought)
and rates them. If I am not mistaken the one comming out on top was
called something like "Kenywood 3100" but I strongly recommend the
article both for the ratings and the explanations.

I like the radio we have. It isn't high-priced - A Kraco which we bought
for $100 and which can be had for even less from David Weiss. The sound
is pretty good, though - we have decent speakers. I like the digital
tuning. When in an unfamiliar area (i.e. travelling) the seek and scan
functions make it easy to find a local station that suits your taste.

Lynne --

No advice, but I'm looking, too. Would you please forward your findings
to Harry Bovik (or me, at least)??

Lynne,
here's a suggestion: if you are concerned about your radio/cassette player
stolen (mine has been stolen 3 times since I have owned my car), I have
convinced The Listening Post in Shadyside (which also sells stereo units)
to sell the Bensi Box, which now goes under the name of the importer, Stereo
Shuttle. This box allows you to remove your radio/cassette player from the
dashboard VERY easily so that you can put it in the trunk or take it with
you when you park your car. If you are interested and want more info call
me (X2569) or the manager of The Listening Post Joe Hopper. The Stereo
Shuttle Box costs 40 or 50 dollars depending on the model you get.

Richard

Lynne, I am having the Listening Post installer install a Stereo Shuttle/Bensi
Box with an Alpine FM/AM/cassette in my car. The listening Post was the only
place I could get to even consider ordering the Bensi Box. If you want to see
what it looks like and/or hear about my installation experience let me know.
I am having the installation done on July 11 because I will be out of town
next week. So, in answer to your question, the L.P. people will sell you
both the Box and a radio and install it in one stop. There radio selection
is limited to sort of fancy ones though.

Richard
