My parents bought a 80 (81?) Caprice Classic from a rental place a few
years ago (in Reno, but they're probably all pretty much alike). They
had nothing but *GOOD* luck with it. As a matter of fact, when it was
demolished this summer in a bad wreck, they hunted and hunted for an
identical replacement, or for anything else from a rental place (they
only sell at certain times of the year). My father is very
car-knowledgeable and has rebuilt several, but never had to put any
extra work on the car....the biggest point being that most rental
agencies have good mechanics and virtually all keep detailed logbooks
on each vehicle. You should, of course, ask for the logbook (or at least
to see it)...I would hesitate at a vehicle or agency that refuses or
doesn't have one.
