It's not really nearby, but I've always gotten really good service from
Parkway Service, on Rt. 51, right down the back of the hill from Mt.
Washington. Tony (the owner and head mechanic) has always been very
good with my family of cars (an 84 Toyota Starlet, an 87 Chevy Sprint,
and an 80 Buick La Sabre). While his prices aren't Bruno-cheap, I feel
that they are reasonable, and he's always real honest about what needs
to be done, what it'll cost, and whether or not he can do it. When he
hasn't been able to do things (like replace the clutch on the Sprint
when it went out), he's recommended folks who could fix the problem have
been all I could ask for (The guy who fixed the clutch gave me an
estimate of cost and charged me EXACTLY what the estimate had been).

I highly recommend Paul's Auto Repair. They specialize in VW's and Audi's.
On Saw Mill Run Blvd (other side of Liberty Tubes), close to a T stop. They're
honest and do very good work for a great price. They've been keeping my
Golf going strong! 884-8866. Good luck!

I have used Rick Hall Auto Service in Turtle Creek for almost 10 years now.
They have maintained all of my cars in that period without any problems.
The phone number is 824-8025 and you take the Parkway East to Churchill.
Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and turn left at the light[Brown
Hill Road.] Go all the way down the long hill--past Scott's Garden Supply
on the left. Pass the traffic light and pass Kabuki Restaurant[good
Japanese food, by the way] on the right and a bit further down on the right
you will find Rick's. Tell him that I sent you.

Paul's VW, on RT 51 (through the tubes, turn left, about 2 miles).
Its out of the way, but its worth the trip (I travel from Sq. Hill).

They are excellent - I take my '83 rabbit there. I have never had a
problem. Once, they did not completely fix something, I took it back
and they made it right, free. They charge a fair price (not cheap),
but they get the job done, and they don't do unnecessary work.

Good luck

I've had good luck with Penn and Negley Gulf (361-9702). I have two old
(7 and 9 years) and they seem to keep them in pretty good order. The
owner, Chuck, is a good guy and understands that grad students are
worried about money. He has always managed to find rebuilt parts for me
that were substantially cheaper than factory costs. The head mechanic,
Ralph, really does a good job.

I recommand Friend's Sunco on Baum Blvd near Negely. I've had very
good experience with them in servicing of my '85 plymouth horizon.
They will always call you and give you the alternatives, they try
to find parts in junkyards. Just yesterday I showed up in the
morning needing a new radiator, my car was ready by 7 pm. I thought
that was fast service considering I had no appointment.

phone numbers 361-9977, 361-8543

Bruno's may have an excellent reputation, but they really take the
cheap way out everytime. My Dasher that 'was maintained perfectly
by Bruno's' almost fell apart on me a month after I had it. All the
repairs Bruno's did (according to the invoices) went.

Try Pawlack's Gulf on Baum and Millvale for ordinary stuff.

For dealer only stuff, try Paul VW's on the South side of the
Liberty Tubes.

(owner of 12 past and current VW's)

I have had my car serviced by the Exxon at Penn and Braddock (Denny's Exxon)
These guys are pretty straight shooters. I once gave them a golden opportunity
to take me to the cleaners and they demurred. I have found them to be honest
and to do very good work.

Constantin Garage - 4510 Henry Street (beneath SEI) 621-8497 (owner Corky)

I have had the best experience with them and they have been recommended to
me by others around here. He's honest and he won't try to sell you
something you don't need, i.e., I took my car to the Exxon on Forbes to have
the brakes checked. They told me I needed 4 new brakes and two rotors. I
took the car to Constantin and he told me the back brakes were good but the
front brakes needed replaced, and that I still had several thousand miles
left on the rotors. I appreciate his honesty, which is a refreshing change
when dealing with garages (yes, I've been burned). You have to call ahead
for an appointment.

Good luck!
