Subject: Toyota Tune-ups

The results of a request for information about tuning up a Toyota.
Responses arrived from 21 to 24 January 1985.

From: Mary.Shaw@CMU-CS-A.ARPA

Seems to me that I go mine tuned up at the Sears store in Century
III something over six months ago and haven't had any problems.

Krebs and King Toyota have done all the work on my Celica that I
haven't done myself in the year I've had it. They seem to be
reasonable and competent, but don't expect blinding diagnostic
insights. They're up on route 8 in Glenshaw just round the big
bend by Glenshaw Glass. It's a dangerous bend, so keep your eyes
peeled if you go there.

I'm not sure if the firm exists in this area, so you'll have to
check on your own; but I have had very good luck with Precision
Tune. They tune-up the car on a sort of treadmill so that they
get the readings while the car runs "under a load". Also, if the
car needs to be re-tuned within the next six months, they will do
it for free. I can vouch for this part of the guarantee
personally, as I had to take my car back after a timing belt
broke.

For a four-cylinder car, it usually costs about $40.00,
which sounds a little steep, but I thought was well worth it.

I have a Tercel and I do not trust Ted McWilliams at all, of
course. I was told that Krebs & King do a good job, but this is
second-hand information only.

I recommend Bill Dobransky at Dynamics Service Center, 5444 Penn
Avenue in Garfield, 361-4073. He has one of those electronic
diagnostic machines and does excellent work at reasonable prices.

I have had reasonable experiences with Rohrich Toyota.

Definitely the negtive one: dont go to the Baum Blvd. Firestone.
They screwed up my car and charged me a huge amount of money. I
had to spend $260.00 more to correct the damage they caused. They
tell you all kinds of theories because they think you are an
idiot.

I've taken my '79 Celica several times to Rohrich Toyota and have
been reasonably happy. I had no problems after a tuneup there,
but I did have a slightly strange problem after they did some
maintenance work on my brakes. They started to make a funny
squealing sound off and on. I took the car back, and they looked
at them again but couldn't find anything wrong. Fortunately, the
noise never came back after they took them apart and put them back
together.

I also knew someone who took their car there for an emissions
test. They found several things wrong and repaired them.
Unfortunately, they neglected to tell my friend that the emissions
law only requires him to pay $50 for repairs in order to pass the
test. He ended up spending over $100. On the other hand, I also
know someone who had problems at Krebs & King with some brake work
he had some done.

I recently bought a Toyota from Krebs & King on Route 8. They
seemed like a very up-front, straight-forward place (They were
willing to quote me sticker prices on the phone, for example.)
They claimed their service rate was the lowest around, and quoted
prices

Rohrich Toyota on West Liberty Avenue is the best and most
expensive place to get Toyotas fixed. Ted McWilliams does not
have the same good reputation!

I had my toyota tuned up in November at Ted McWilliams and am
having the same problems. This is the worst its ever run. Also,
I have not been able to get it to turn over the past three
days-cold weather I suspect.

I suspect that you have a car with a carburetor and not one with
fuel injection. During tune-up the mechanic may have adjusted the
choke when the engine was warm instead of doing it when cold. If
the choke doesn't operate properly in cold weather, the car is
unlikely to start. If the engine cranked but did not catch, the
choke is probably at fault. However, if your engine did not
crank, your battery might not be providing enough charge. The
starting power of a battery is less in cold weather.

I had similar problems after I got my Tercel car tuned-up at
Rohrich Toyota. The adjustment of choke is tricky and requires
finesse. After making three trips to Rohrich, I gave up and had
the choke adjusted by Jim Raab's shop (Mobil gas station located
at Center and Morewood). The car seems to be doing much better
now although it is still not completely normal.

Last year, I had the tune-up done at Airport Toyota. They do a
very good job but they are located quite far from the city. I
suggest you take the car to them. I bought my car there and I
have had almost all service work done by them. They require an
appointment. If you tell them in advance, you can have the work
done on your car while you wait.
