Hi Harry,

These are the responses I got to a query on the general bboard about
finding good dealer service for Nissan cars. There are four positive
votes for Wetzel (used to be Mervis) and a negative vote for each
Wetzel and A&L Nissan.

John,

Mervis changed ownership to Wetzel. I use them for major problems on my 85
Maxima. They are not cheap but so far the repairs have been good. I have had
to replace an alternator as well as an air conditioning compressor recently.
The body shop did execellent work on replacing a fender.

I went to Wetzel for a tuneup and oil change and had no problems.

Wetzel Motor Works on Baum Boulevard (Nissan and Mercedes Benz dealer) is
very good. I may be wrong, but I *think* that Wetzel used to be Mervis Motors.
Service managers Bruce and Frank are very nice, and, whatever work I have had
done there has always been done without any problems.

Shortly before I moved to Pgh, a Nissan dealer in NY botched up a major repair
job for me in a way that looks like I'm going to need a new engine sometime.
I'd pretty much given up on getting any compensation from the NY dealership
on my own, and Frank and Bruce really helped me out on this one.... at least I
got a good part of the original repair bill back, although that's not much
towards a new engine...

Finally, these guys strike me as just a little bit wierd - They are very very
unwilling to do any work that is not absolutely necessary. (They won't refuse
flat out, but they'll certainly tell you that there's no point in doing it).
To me this seems unusual because I've never met a dealer that didn't want to
take my money, independent of whether or not the service was good otherwise....

The only thing I don't like about Wetzel is the (*~&(*~&"( strip of sidewalk
they use as parking for the dealership. It's a real pain to get into (your
car has to climb over the curb, for one thing) and a pain to get back out of.
You'll see what I mean if you're there on a crowded day. On the other hand,
they'll usually offer to get your car out for you, so it's not so bad.

Oh yeah, they also will wash your car for free with any service. Sometimes they
ask and sometimes they just go ahead and do it anyway...

John...

I always took my Nissan(s) to Mervis, and was always satisfied with
them. I doubt they were the best-priced around town, but they were in
the proper range, and they always fixed any problem on the first visit.
The work has always been good, and the procedures well-explained.

This information is about a year and a half old - I've since moved on to
Honda ownership.

We had good initial luck with A&L Nissan in Monroeville (by the Mall),
but then they failed my wife's 83 Pulsar Hatch on a yearly inspection,
claiming it needed $1500 worth of repairs (a second opinion at Boron
Procare could not find any of the supposed problems).

A&L was a definite improvement over Mervis (Mervis rebuilt my wife's
carburetor, and installed it with two hoses switched).
