This is a recommendation to stay away from the Will Rogers Driving School.
When I was in high school, they were the school contracted to give lessons to
students. As our school had contracted them out, I assumed that they were a
reputable business. However, the lessons I received proved to be less than
satisfactory.

The following year, the school refused to renew their contract when it was
discovered that they had not been giving students their full number of lessons
but had been reporting that they had. And since they were payed by the student,
not the hour ....

Sid,
When I was in high school, Kaufmann's driving school ran the
driver's education course. I think they are based in Pittsburgh,
perhaps operating out of Kaufmann's department store. The quality was
good, but I have no idea what they cost since the high school took care
of that. Actually, my opinion of their quality may be slightly warped,
since my parents had already taught me to drive and I already had my
liscense (I took the course to see if I had missed anything, and more
importantly to lower my insurance premiums).

I read your post and am also looking for a driving school, I have a few prices
although no recommendations. Kaufmann's and Gimbels are approx. $23.00 for
45 min and $45.00 for 90 min. Using their car for the test is approx. $44.00.

My 17 year old son is taking the course at Kaufman's downtown. There are
basically 30 hours of classroom instruction (which meets an insurance
requirement and gets you slightly reduced rates) and four 90-minute driving
lessons. Classroom is on the 10th floor, and class starts when Kaufman's
opens at 1000 saturday mornings. The number is in the yellow pages under
driving schools or something similar. There are others with similar
services, and similar costs. We chose Kaufman's because the classroom
sessions are given continuously, every saturday, and one can start at nearly
any time.

The driving lessons are scheduled individually, and the instructor picks up
the student at a prearranged place (e.g., home) and returns to same.

The course is not required to pass the learners permit exam: study of the
booklet is sufficient for that.

My son says that it is useful. He takes the driving test the 23rd, so then
we will know more about effectiveness.

passed their test. --JC

Probably the most cost-effective way to learn driving is to con someone
into letting you learn on his (or a rented) car for a day or two. An
alternative is to take just a couple of lessons from a professional school,
and THEN to con someone into letting you use his car. I don't think there
is much to choose between the various schools; I got my lessons from the
Academy School of Driving (or is it Academy Driving School?). The guy
knows the local police and the test tracks, which is a big help.
