Andy, My parents owned a 1980 Chevette.  This was a Scooter (one of the
lower budget models).  This car was NOT reliable.  Almost from the first
week they had the car, they had problems with it.  First, it would stall for
no reason (even at highway speeds).  This continued for some time until,
finally, the dealer put a new carburetor on the car.  This seemed to fix the
problem for a time, but then it began to re-occur (although to a lesser
extent).  Second, the car is pretty infamous for eating up timing belts.
They kept it until 1984 and it had already gone through 3 of them.  Finally,
the car had NO room in it.  It was OK for carrying things as it had a fairly
large hatchback area (augmented by folding the back seat down).  The back
seat was more of a 'token' back seat than anything; pretty much useless
except for increasing the hatchback area.

Oh, one more thing.  This may be a function of the dealer, but we had MUCH
better success having the car tuned up at an independent garage (such as
Precision Tune) than we did with having this work done at the dealer (the
dealer is in Maryland, so you needn't worry about running into them).
