NOW FIVE (count 'em -5) car washes in the vicinity(?)
I can think of three choices, listed below in ascending order of time from
school.
1) Monroeville: Go out to Monroeville. Get off at first M'ville exit,
follow rte. 22 until you get to Jonnet building (and Gee Bee dept store)
on left; turn left. This is just before the Miracle Mile shopping center.
follow this road , branching left always. This is, I believe, the old
William Penn highway. Eventually, you will come to the car wash on the
left.
1a) (NEW) I saw this one in passing, and as of two weeks ago it was
still under construction but apparently 80-90% complete. Get off first
Monroeville exit on Parkway, turn left at first light (Rodi Rd.) It's down
a ways on the right hand side. FYI, (if such things interest you), there's
a Gold Circle Store another mile or so down on left, in the Penn Hills
Mall.
2)(about the same time as previous choice): Pleasant Hills. Get to
Century III mall. About 1 Mile S of the Mall on rte. 51 is a car wash,
on the left.
.......The best way to Cent.III mall is !!!NOT!!! through liberty tubes.
Go across Greenfield Bridge and go straight through the light, up the
hill. Turn right (this is on to Greenfield Ave. (Blvd?))
(alternatively, go across Panther hollow bridge, go right to Blvd of
the allies bridge out of park. take the first left after bridge, then
turn left again at the stop sign. follow a windy road, go over bridge,
and wind up halfway down greenfield ave hill. turn right onto ave.) Go
down this avenue until you are about to go under a bridge; turn left at
the stoplight instead of going under bridge. This takes you into
Hazelwood. Go straight, and then across bridge. Continue as straight as
possible (i.e., follow the sign for rte.885 - do not bear right down a
ramp.). Turn right at the second light on that side of the river (the
first light is right near an abandonned school), and go up the hill.
You will go under an overpass, which is actually runway 10/28 of the
county airport. If you want to get to the Cent.III mall, go straight
through the next light (i.e., go between Sambo's and McDonald's) and
follow signs for the mall. I guess that to go to the car wash, your
best bet would be to go through the mall parking lot to get to rte. 51
(go left on 51 out of the lot). During non-rush hour times, this is
probably faster than going to Monroeville. given the current condition
of the Parkway. <
> 3)
South park- instead of going through light towards McDonalds, turn right
onto the divided highway, which is Lebanon Church Rd. at this point. It turns
into Brownsville Rd., and continues to South Park and beyond.
P.S. - this car wash now apparently closes at 5 pm.
3.) Murrysville: Go out Parkway past first Monroeville exit, second
M'ville, and Plum exits, then take Murrysville exit (the last one
before the Turnpike). This puts you on 22 east. Follow this a ways.
Somewhere past Hardee's is the car wash (on the left).
4.) North: Go E on Fifth to where it turns into Penn. At the light, go sort
of straight and down the hill (this is Washington Blvd). Follow Washington,
and at its end (the river) turn left and then go over Highland Park Bridge.
Once over river, get onto Rte. 28 South. Get off at rte. 8 exit (to Butler).
Go north on 8. Somewhere down on right after a few miles there is an ARCO
station and automatic car wash. This is a pretty good car wash., better than
most automatics. Since a) the gas at the station is cheap, and b) the car
wash is cheaper with a fill-up, this is a pretty good deal. Anyway, there is
a coin-op (self-wash) car wash a bit further down rte.8 on right, hidden on
the other side of a bend in the road. I just added this one because it
was closed down last year, and apparently just re-opened. This is the closest
coin-op wash, but is the scuzziest (it's only 8 miles from school). In
winter, the place becomes positively dangerous, as the owner lets the ice
build up to a foot thick on the floor. (and there is a 1ft. deep hole in the
middle that you drive your car into, and have real fun getting out of,
providing you've survived sliding around on the ice while washing your car).
North Park: keep on going out rte. 8, until you get tot Wildwood rd.
Turn left and follow to North Park. Don't look for road sign for Wildwood
road, but for a sign for North park, near a Stop 'n Go on the right. A couple
of miles further on is a Turnpike Entrance. This might be one of the fastest
ways to get to the Turnpike if you're going west, and perhaps the fastest way
to get to 79 if you're going North.
Friendly's ice cream - There's one between wildwood road and turnpike
entrance on rte. 8, on left hand side. It's much nicer than Sweet Williams,
and a breath of New England fast foodery.
Hope this helps.
