They did not sell me an alternator today, but instead dug waaay down deep and tightened a well-hidden belt, then repaired the indicator light in my dash which had failed to warn me of impending doom. Total charge for about an hour's worth of tinkering: $10. PS: I hung out with the car while this work was being done, which was nice since not every shop will let you in the work area. You get much more bang for your buck this way, since the mech will often comment about things which aren't broken yet but will be soon. It also seems to encourage little extra flourishes of TLC for the car, though maybe you always get that and just didn't realize it?
