Thank you to everyone who made recommendations about mechanics! For
those who are interested, here are the results.

Two garages tied for first place, each with three recommendations:
Pauls VW, Rt 51 near liberty tubes
German Motor Werks, Penn Ave betw 30th & 31st (Strip dist)

Also mentioned were
  Jack's VW (2 votes)
  Troy Hill Automotive (1 vote)
  Johnson Collision Service (1 vote)

Three people mentioned that they had had problems with a garage -- all
named the same place -- VW Haven. According to one person it's "cash
only, no receipt", making guarantees sort of dodgy.

Thanks again.

Ned

Hi Karen
Try Rick Hall Auto Service in Turtle Creek. I used to have a '79 Rabbit that
he took care of for several years.

I've been pretty happy with Paul's VW, 2033 Saw Mill Run, 884-8866.
They are honest, relatively cheap, and are willing to explain what's
happening. They are also conservative on making repairs (don't fix it
until it really needs it, even if they know it'll go bad in a year).

Karen,

I have an 85 Jetta. I have had body work done at Johnson Collision
Service once. (They do more than just body work.) I have had some
random stuff done at Paul's Auto Repair (Rt 51). Both come highly
recommended by friends, and I was satisfied with both. They both seem
to be honest shops. (I am dropping my car off tonight to have some
more work done by Johnson.)

I have had very good luck with Paul's VW (884-8866) on Saw Mill Run Blvd.
They are not the cheapest, but they are not unreasonable. The bottom line
is that my 85 GTI runs better now with 100,000 miles than it did with
70,000 miles before I came to Pittsburgh and started taking the car to
them.

It is a bit out of the way, but they will fix the car while you wait and
there is a good place to eat breakfast within walking distance.

Paul's VW on RT 51. (Through the Liberty Tubes, turn left, about 2
miles). Their labor isn't cheap, but is reasonable. I can't say
enough about the work though. I've always had everything done well,
and nothing extra done. The best example was prior to driving across
country I went in and said - take a look at the car and let me know if
anything should be done - leaving myself wide open. They recommended
replacing a $50 tie bar. I expected they would come up with about
$400 of excess stuff.

My only other recommondation is to stay away from VW Haven. I have a
list of messages saying why, including my own bad experience if you
are interested.

Paul
