I posted asking about the possibilities of a "quick A/C recharge
for my car" because the A/C didn't work and I was driving a long
distance very soon (a few days). Since non of the options seemed
possible, we decided to suffer and not try to get the A/C fixed
before our trip. The day before we left, the A/C magically started
working and has been working ever since. Therefore I never tried
any of these possibilities

	Hi,

I've always gone to Bruno's on Mellon St in East Liberty, but I
assume you've tried them and learned of the typical 6-7 day delay. I'm
becoming more and more happy with M&G Auto in Squirrel Hill, located
geographically near the corner of Murray and Forward. That is, I've been
happy each time there, and have been going there more often.

I don't know if they can do the a/c recharge, but if they can you're
likely to get it done within a day or two for a good price. I can cite
previous recommendations by Julio Rosenblatt and Juan Leon as well (for
general work, not a/c-specific).

In article <4nr1i8$cm3@cantaloupe.srv.cs.cmu.edu> you write:
>Does anyone know of places that will just do a A/C recharge
>(perhaps analogous to the quick-oil-change places that
>have sprouted up over the past 10 years)?

I've had this done at the Goodyear service center on Penn Circle in
East Liberty, a few years ago. As I recall, the A/C service was
about $50-70, but if they find a detectable leak I think they might not
be allowed to recharge the coolant until the leak is fixed.

It used to be possible to buy kits and do it yourself ... cheap enough
that if you used the transfer plumbing only once you came out ahead of
taking it to a shop. However I suspect that you may no longer be able
to buy these, as Freon-12 became a controlled substance in (I think)
December 1994. I have transfer plumbing and a stash of Freon-12 that I
will lend you if you can assure me you will replace my Freon, i.e., a
shop promises sell it to you to give back to me. -- Mel

Before any shop can recharge you, they must test your system to verify
it has no leaks, and if it does, repair them and test again before they
can refill you. This is a state or federal law now, to help prevent the
CFC's from getting out and "heating the planet."

That said, I've now had my system tested and filled the last 2 summers
(I bought my used car in the winter 2 years ago and didn't know it had
A/C problems until the weather warmed up). The first time it was just
empty, the second it had 2 leaks that they fixed, and I now find that my
A/C doesn't cool again this summer, so I'm headed back... I use
Constantin Garage in the SEI parking lot for all my service, and I'm
generally happy, but wondering about this yearly need for A/C work (it
works fine all summer, but I guess it has a real slow leak that isn't
showing up on the pressure test). I called yetserday for an appointment
and they offered me this Thursday, but I was going to be out of town, so
got one next week. 621-8497

I believe Jiffy Lube (and places like it) do A/C work, although I have
no personal experience with them.

I can't give you any recommendations for AC repair. But, you should
be aware that Freon is not made anymore. The only Freon available
is recycled, or stockpiled. It is very expensive. The government
legislated that Freon would be replace by an non-cfc substitute, to
protect the ozone layer.

Good luck

Technically, repair shops aren't allowed to just
recharge your car with that nasty old freon any more...
They are SUPPOSED to find and fix a leak before allowing
you to drive off with another dose of the nasty old
freon in there again. With the idea being that you
won't just keep going in each year and burning up more
ozone by the end of the summer when it all leaks out.

Any shop that just fills your AC is by definition not
the "reputable" shop that you're looking for.

Scott
