I read a book about buying cars a while ago. It was called "Don't Get
Taken Every Time," I believe, and was written by an ex-car salesman.
Most of the book pointed out ways new car salesman could sucker a
customer, but it also mentioned buying from rental agencies. The
author's advice was to be very careful. You might want to take a look
at this book. I can't remember all of the concerns, but they included
things like
- 25,000 miles is really two years of wear.
- Rental car drivers may have been more abusive than normal
- The rental companies did not have to maintain the car any more than
  would keep it on the road for a year
- The prices may not be that good compared to what you might pay a
  private owner.

Just beware!
