Subject: Buying a New Car

Dr. Bovik:

This is in response to no particular query, but I think this useful
information is not yet in your mail files.

If you're buying a new car, you'll want to check out the pricing
service offered by Consumer Reports. For a small fee, they'll send you
a list of dealer prices and options for any new car, along with a
reprint of one of their articles on buying a car. I followed their
suggestions, and they work.

The approach they recommend is to narrow your choice to about three
different cars, then get these "prices and options" lists for the cars
you're considering. You can drive a pretty hard bargain when you know
the dealer's cost.

Some information on this is in every issue of Consumer Reports. More
complete information is in their annual "cars" issue, which I think is
always the April issue.

I'm confident their recommendations saved me a few hundred dollars.
