Subject: new cars (Toyota)

I just purchased a new Tercel wagon (1987) from Rohrich Toyota on West
Liberty Av. Vince Panucci was the salesperson, he was very reasonable and
open. (he was very open about the profit margin on their rustproofing)

My approach was to get the consumer report quote on the car that I wanted,
and brought it with me. I had prepared an offer on one of the cars in their
lot, so they knew that I had done some homework. As soon as Vince and his
sales manager saw that I knew what their prices were, we sat down and
discussed their profit. They wanted 800 I offered 200 and after checking
with someone else (or perhaps no one at all) they took it. They might have
gone for 100 but I figured 200 was reasonable. Once we had set this, we
both knew what the final price would be.

One thing that I did not like was after everything is written up, they have
another person who handles the cash. The first thing this person does is
try to sell you an extended warranty, then they try to convince you that
it is less expensive in the long run to finance through them. (They even
use a "computer" to show you that this is true.) A simple NO stated several
times was sufficient to convince them that I was not interested.
