A friend of mine has a Rabbit Diesel, from the first year of production
('78?).  He has had reliability problems that cost a mint.  It threw a
rod.  When I rode with him, I got the idea that it was partly his fault.
He revs the engine up to the redline every time before shifting.

Consumer Reports was less than enthused about the Escort wagon (& hatchback).
