I bought a year-old Toyota Starlet from Budget Rental out
at the airport, but checked out cars at all three places
(Avis, Hertz, and Budget). If you are looking for automatic
transmission, forget it. Hertz (or Avis, the one on the corner)
had 2 Ford Escorts, and Budget had a couple of Toyotas. Overall
the cars tend to be the optimal in power-automatic whatever.

Cars, as you say, tend to be about a year old, but they sell them
at about 15,000 miles, not 25,000. If you decide to get a car
they will fix anything wrong with it before you pay for it,
you will get 30 days free warranty on everything, and one years
full warranty on some things (I don't remember exactly what, but
it is just about everything except body which could cause major
expenditures to repair).

Prices seem to be very good for what you get. My car has
new tires, am/fm stereo, air-conditioning and tinted glass.
With registration, taxes, and additional warranty, it cost
about $7200. The list price on cars seems to range from about
$6000 to $15000, depending on the model you buy (Escorts on the lower
end of the scale, Trans Ams on the higher).

Hope this is helpful.
