Subject: Honda dealers revisited
Cc: kuhn@malvolio.lcl.cmu.edu

Here are the results, including all the new messages that I got after
my last post. There were a total of 18 direct responses to my posts,
found another 4 in the Bovik database, and was sent an additional 10
by Bill McSteen. As before, I rated each person's testimony on a
somewhat subjective basis, as one of the following: very bad, bad,
poor, OK, good, and very good. For instance: if the person bought a
car from the dealer, and didn't say much more positive about it, it
meant that dealer got an 'OK' on sales. If they really liked the
dealer or said they got a really good deal, the dealer got a 'good' or
'v.good'. So, here they are:

McKean Sales: 2 v.bad, 4 OK, 3 good, 1 v.good
             Service: 4 bad, 2 good, 1 v.good

Dean Sales: 1 v.bad, 2 OK, 3 good
             Service: 1 v.bad, 2 good

Yenko Sales: 1 poor, 1 OK
             Service: 1 good, 1 v.good

Valley Sales: 1 poor, 4 good, 1 v.good
             Service: 1 v.bad, 1 poor, 1 OK, 1 v.good

Baierl Sales: 2 good
             Service: 1 poor, 2 good, 1 v.good

Honda Village Sales: 3 good
               Service: 1 v.good

Washington Sales: 3 good, 2 v.good
             Service: no data

You may interpret these results however you wish. I also got one strong
recommendation for Matta Motors in Glassport as an excellent Honda service
center. They aren't a dealer, and they work exclusively on Hondas. Again,
Thanks to those who responded.
                                         - Tom

P.S.: For those interested in where I ended up - I ended up taking an
offer from Valley Honda after getting into a pricing war
between McKean and them. Also, for those who were turned off
by there service department - since they have moved to a new
location (and taken the service department along), it appears
to be very clean, professional and reasonably priced.

P.P.S. For first time Honda buyers out there - be prepared for more
grief than you could imagine to get a good deal. It's a
seller's market (at least on base-line Civics) and dealers
won't budge on price until you've got on-paper deals from
someone else, or have demonstrated that they'll lose your
       business to a competitor.
