Summary of responses on post for State Inspection of Cars
Asked for honest, inexpensive, and proximity to CMU
---

From: Andrew Wolfe <wolfe@vw.ece.cmu.edu>
Pawlak's Gulf on Center & Millvale is good. Been going there for >5 years.

From: neek@NEEK.FAC.CS.CMU.EDU
Constanin Garage, directly under the SEI:
621-8497. Very honest, competant, and convenient
to CMU.

From: Mike.Fox@MAPS.CS.CMU.EDU
I'm pretty sure that Bruno's on Mellon St. do inspections. If you've seen the
recent praises for Bruno's on the market bboard then you'll know they are pretty
well regarded. -mike

Hi-Tech Auto, 781-5665. The cost for the entire inspection (including
emissions) is just $8. Their garage is on Butler Street at the 61st
bridge. I have found them to be quite honest.

The Amoco on the Boul. of the Allies, (I think its Jim's Amoco) did my
car last time. I failed the emissions inspection, and they charged me
$20 to adjust, but they could have found a lot more of those nitpicky
things like wiper blades and stuff. I'd recommend them, and you can
easily walk to school from there (it is closer than where I have to
park sometimes.)

From: Scott Crowder <R.Scott.Crowder@RSC.BOLTZ.CS.CMU.edu>
I take my car to Penn&Negley Gulf at the corner of Penn and Negley. Phone is
361-9702. The owner, Chuck, is a very honest person and their mechanics are
good.

From: Alon Lavie <alavie@F.GP.CS.CMU.edu>
Bruno's garage in East Liberty will do it for something like $20
if I remember correctly.
I highly recomend there services for any kind of mechanical work as well.
They are professional, do good work for reasonable prices, and very
friendly and patient as well. The head machanic has always taken the time
to explain to me exactly what the problem was and how they fixed it.
(I just had my car A/C fixed there yesterday...)

Forbes and Murray Gulf in Sq Hill.
I took my car to Krebs Toyota who wanted to replace all the brake parts,
and other work totalling $1200. Then I took it to Hess Exxon near CMU.
They thought the brakes were OK, but they wouldn't pass the shock
absorbers. Then I took it to the Gulf station. All they wanted to
do was to replace a $10 brake hose.
