So here is the upshot of the car inspection:

The Sunoco on Murray wanted $70 for a broken lens, approx. $300 for
exhaust work and over $100 for break work.

I got several different recommendations on places to go. I finally
chose Baum Blvd Tire because I had a lot of difficulty scheduling
appointments at some of the places.

Before taking my car in for reinspection, I went to a junkyard for the
lens. The junkyard, Matta Motors, did not have any used lenses, but
they had a new one in stock for $33. It took me less than 5 minutes to
install. A lens is just a piece of plastic that screws right in to your
car. Sunoco wanted $54 for the part and $16 to install.

I take my car to Baum and it passed, no work required. The guy said my
exhaust needed work, but it wasn't leaking so he couldn't fail me on it.
He also said my breaks could use some work. Same diagnosis as Sunoco.
So I asked, how much to do the exhaust work? "Oh, that'll run you about
$100." $300 at Sunoco. And how much for the breaks? "That'll probably
cost you at least another $50."

Enough said.
