My inquiry about spring and shock repairs yielded no shops currently
specializing in this type of work. (A firm called Point Spring and
Drive Shaft Co. used to do this work, but now only manufactures springs.)
Instead, I got recommendations on auto-repair shops in general. Since
this information may also be of interest, it is provided below.

Summary:

Bruno's Garage	East Liberty Ave. & Mellon St. 361-1750 Szekely
Midas	(but see previous messages in this file) Hastings
Morningside Automotive	1801 Morningside Ave. 661-6400 C. Miller
Superior Auto Body 5800 Alderson 421-5315 Dwyer

I now believe my springs "need rebuilt." I haven't had this work done yet,
as everyone who looks at them tells me the situation isn't critical.

Ed,

My wife and I have been taking our car to Superior on Alderson
(sort of behind Poli's Restaurant) since Jan. 84, when our insurance
agent recommended them after an accident. They're very reliable and
reluctant to fix anything that doesn't need to be fixed. I can't compare
them to other places with respect to prices since I haven't done much
shopping around, but I'm pleased with their honesty and workmanship.

They redid most of the front end which certainly included those shocks in front
which are actually called something else which escapes me at the moment.
Struts! That's it!

Ed,

I always take my car to "Bruno's Garage" for repairs and inspection.
They have always done a good job on my 76 Ford Maverik. I had the
transmission, the ignition and the gas pump repaired there, and never
had problems with them again. They also did minor things for the
inspection.

They are good people to deal with. They tell you exactly what they are
going to do, and they are fairly cheap. A friend of mine from Pitt
also goes there, and he is also satisfied with their work.

The garage is located close to the corner of Negley and Liberty (on
Mellon Street). Their number is 361-1750.

Last summer I bought a new car and leaving behind my old mechanic was an
even harder chore than making new car payments! He doesn't specialize
in anything like shocks or brakes, but just simply does very good all
around repairs. His name is Mike and he owns Morningside Automotive
(unfortunately, yes, in Morningside, but worth the trip). I used that
garage before Mike owned it -- he worked there as a mechanic and when
it went up for sale, he snatched it up because it had built a good
reputation over the years. If you should decide to go there, tell him
"Cam that used to have the red 1976 Nova" sent you. I think he'll
remember -- he saw that car a lot!

Try Point Spring and Driveshaft Co. at 419 Melwood Ave.,
622-7700. They fabricate and install. I don't know if they do cars, but
they do work on vans/small trucks at very reasonable turnaround and
rates.

(Upon being informed that they're now out of the biz, he replied...)

Sigh. My experience was based on the following: I had a bad leaf
spring on my Dodge van, and after the dealer blew me off, another dealer
recommended them. They installed a new spring for less than the first dealer
wanted for the part. I later needed fron coil springs, and went to the Midas
on Allies in Oakland (Midas for a while was providing a limited guarantee on
springs). They were no longer guaranteeing their springs, which they ended
up getting from Point Spring etc. Perhaps Midas still does this?
