Harry,

I recently posted asking about auto tire recommendations. I only received
two responses, and they are below, followed by my own experience.

I have used many brands of tires since we in my family have owned a
great number of vehicles, Goodyears are good but their durabiltiy isn't
that great they will run out much faster than many competing brands, if
you are a looking for an all season tire that will last you for about
50,000 miles, were talk ROI (return on investment) get some Michelin all
season tires. The dealer here is Lockhart tire, (look for them in the
yellow pages). Michelin tire people will guarantee their product and
give no chit chat, practically every other tire brand out there is
dogshit compared to their tires, I'm talking if tried bridgestone,
firestone, kumho, Goodyear, etc. and for a good value there is nothing
better out there.
You should look at probably Michelin MX L or XZ 4 which are probably
their cheapest ones.

I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND THAT THE TOP OF THE LINE SEARS TIRES WERE THE BEST.

***My own experience***
Not having too much to go on, I called several places and asked the person
who answered the phone to educate me about tires. They all told me I want
all-season steel-belted radial tires (which sounded good to me), and they
all gave me prices of tires ranging from about $49-$89 (I didn't want to
spend any more than that). Since there are so many tire companies and so
many different tire "models" made by each company, it was very hard to
compare prices, because it was hard to find common tires between any two
places I called.

The first place I called was Tire America out in Monroeville (856-0701).
The salesman who talked to me was very friendly and very helpful, even when
I told him I was going to call around and get other prices before
committing. As it turned out, he was the best salesman of all that I called
(as far as helpfulness and courtesy), and he also had the best prices of all
the places I called. So, I drove out there (it's kind of hard to find,
because it's nestled in among the car dealerships beyond the Mall), but once
I got there, I was greeted again with courtesy and friendliness. Inside
they had a bulletin board with newspaper advertisements from competing
stores, and alongside their competitors' prices, they had their own prices
listed, and they were all equal or lower than their competitors' prices.

The only down side was that there were several costs that I wasn't
anticipating, such as tire stems (air valves), balancing, alignment, etc.,
although most of these services came with a warrantee of sorts (lifetime on
tire stems and balancing, 6 months on alignment). These extra costs (plus
tax) increased my total output from $126 (cost of two tires) to $220. I
still feel I got a good deal, though, as I plan to make use of the
warrantees (i.e. get my wheels realigned once or twice more within the
6-month period), and I imagine that similar charges exist at the other tire
places, too.

Overall, I would highly recommend Tire America. They had a very good
selection, excellent prices, and very friendly service.
