I went to "Transmissions by Lucille" in Penn Hills for a minor problem
(late, ultra quiet upshifting). They correctly diagnosed a leaky vacuum
valve, and put no pressure on me to replace the slightly leaky oil seal.
Above all, they did not even ask to drop the pan. (This is good; oil
coming out of the vacuum valve is pretty obvious, so why bother looking
for trouble when there's an obvious first solution that will have to be
done anyway.) They fixed both the valve and the seal for me competantly
and at a reasonable price.

The one point with which I disagreed with Lucille was her assertion that I
did not need to have the oil changed as long as it still looked good and
wasn't burned. She may be right, but I have read elsewhere that regular
changes of transmission oil (for an automatic) are the most important
part of preventive maintenance. Since changing the transmission oil is
relatively cheap compared to most transmission repairs, I believe in doing it
every couple of years.
