Mail-From: local user C410ML70 at 18-Sep-82 14:55:21-EDT Date: 18 September 1982 1454-EDT (Saturday) From: Monica.Lam at CMU-10A To: Howard.Gayle , lapotin@CMU-EE-1 at CMU-10A, nigel.foster@CMU-RI-FAS at CMU-10A, Harry.Bovik at CMU-10A Subject: telenet Message-Id: <18Sep82 145442 ML70@CMU-10A> The local telenet number is 288-9950 for the 300 baud connection and 288-9974 for the 1200 baud connection. You'll need a modem to dial up since there is no dial-out capability in any of the dept machines. After you dial up, 2 CRs (carriage return) will signal full-duplex transmission. You will be prompted for terminal type, there are special ids for each terminal type. If you do not know the id, a CR will do. You next have to type: c "access-number" CR There is an access number for each site. There seems to be no way you can find the number except to ask the computation center of the place you want to connect to, since Telenet does not publish them. Normally the host will disconnect the link after you log off, but if it does not, type CR @ CR. The access number of CMU is 41228, this connects you to the micom. It will then prompt you for the "PORT GROUP". You can get to the computation center machines by just typing in the name. The front end for the dept machines is 46 and it runs at 1200 baud. At the present there are no 300 baud connections. Chuck Augustine of the computation center has pamphlets on the use of Telenet if you want to know more details. There is a list of Telenet telephone numbers across the country in the User Service Consultation room. (Note these are not to be confused with the secret access number). Telenet has a toll-free number for information (800)336-0437 also. (You cannot get the access number through them either).
