(There may be a few more tomorrow.) -- Benli Date: Sat, 24 Sep 88 20:06:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Jay Mathew Libove Subject: Re: Modem opinions I use a US Robotics Courier 2400 baud internal modem, and find that it works very well. The only problem I ever have had is probably not modem related, but I'll tell you anyway in case you get anything else like it: sometimes I'll dial a number and though the target modem answers, my modem never "hears" it and no connection results. Since that is always with CS dialups, I assume it is bad CS modems causing it. -Jay Subject: 2400 modems Date: Sat, 24 Sep 88 20:11:11 EDT From: Ralf.Brown@B.GP.CS.CMU.EDU Highly recommended: desktalk ][ 2400 was $149 without error correction, $239 with MNP 4 from USA-FLEX as of three months ago (probably another $10 cheaper by now). My father has the version without EC, I've got the one with EC, and we're both extremely happy with them. I initially wasn't able to connect using the MNP error correction. It turned out that I had received one with a somewhat older version of the firmware. When I contacted Incomm (the manufacturer) about this, they immediately sent a new EPROM, which I received two days later. Both USA-FLEX and Incomm are good companies to deal with. Call 1-800-USA-FLEX to order. Date: Sat, 24 Sep 88 20:52:15 EDT From: Drew.Anderson@VI.RI.CMU.EDU Subject: Modem opinions I have a Zoom 2400HC internal modem and like it very much. In fact, I bought another one for home use and my boss bought one for his home use. Procomm is the software that comes with it (at least on the internal version) and is very nice software. If you do not have a PC, then I guess that that does not matter. The modem performs very well. I get very little line noise (if any) and have used it for many long distance transfers. I am very pleased with it. I paid $169 for mine. $140 is not a bad price for an external. It's been burned in for almost a month now, and hasn't given me any problems. It also comes with a 5 year limited warranty. Granted, it's not the lowest price around, but you the PC store is mighty convienient. But they got it for more like $170-180 instead of $200. Joe
