There is one in /usr/andrew/local/tex/localstyles (I think this is the
right path, if not it is similar)

/afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/shivers/lib/tex contains a bunch of LaTeX style
files that I use for various things, like writing dissertations. You
may find them useful, too.

===============================================================================
Theses:
A brief word on theses, if you're wondering about what the official
CMU thesis style is. As far as I can tell, CMU doesn't have one.
None of this stupid, stone-age stuff about doublespaced text or
anything. Being an enlightened place, they assume you have heard of
word processors and laser printers. In short, the standard report
and book documentstyles seem to be fine. So that is why when you
poke around you will see horrible style files called suthesis.sty
and mitthesis.sty, but no cmuthesis.sty.

However, see scs-titlepage.sty below for more on the title page for
T.R.'s and theses.

===============================================================================
Here's a briefly annotated list of some of the files in
    /afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/shivers/lib/tex
These files are commented in my usual style: copiously. Poke
around; see what you turn up.

acmconf2.sty
A conference proceedings style. Takes a style option [preprint]
that runs off the paper with page numbers, headers, and a "to appears"
notice in the copyright space at the bottom of page 1/col 1.

bob.sty
    J. R. "Bob" Dobbs

boxedminipage.sty
Like minipage, but with a boxed border. Useful for figures.

catmac.tex
catmactest.tex
    John Reynolds category theory macros.

cmu-note.sty
A nice style option for writing working papers or notes so you
can hand them out to your friends or advisor. The right thing
for a paper while it's growing up into a T.R. or conference
    submission. Needs cmulogo1.ps.

cmulogo.ps
cmulogo1.ps
    Two Postscript tilted-square CMU logos. The cmulogo.ps square is hollow;
    The cmulogo1.ps square is shaded.

code.sty
Weak verbatim mode for doing code. You can still do LaTeX stuff inside.

ct.sty
Replaces ugly Courier font with nicer, denser cmtt font for \tt,
even when you use Postscript font styles (e.g., [times]).

drafthead.sty
Headers for paper drafts. Includes "draft" in a box, and the time & date
   the file was TeX'd.

fletter.sty
Letter style for friendly (non-business) letters.

hax.tex
Bunch of stuff I use in my papers.

my-art.sty
Basically, cmu-art that doesn't add those periods after section numbers.

scs-ltr.sty
A CMU letter style that is compatible with the standard letter style
(cmu-ltr is gratuitously incompatible). Will fake up letterhead or
let you use letterhead stationery. Has a \fax{...} command.

scs-titlepage.sty
A title-page style for SCS tech reports and theses.

cmu-titlepage.sty has some problems. The title page is numbered page 0,
which is an even number. But it's a right hand page. Right hand pages
are supposed to have *odd* page numbers. LaTeX will get the margins
backwards if you are using the [twoside] option. Furthermore, commands
like \cleardoublepage don't work right. scs-titlepage.sty numbers the
title page from 1, not 0. (This means you must do a
       \setcounter{page}{1}
after you're done with the title page stuff and are ready to start the
   paper body.)

Also, the paper title has to be *physically* centered on the page
so it'll be centered in the little cut-out window of the cheesy
cardboard covers that publications slaps on as a front cover. But
   if the left and right margins aren't equal, \begin{center}...\end{center}
won't do the right thing. scs-titlepage.sty physically centers the title
   box.

Books and long papers (e.g., theses) have two numbering
sequences: one for the "front matter" (title page, abstract,
dedication, preface, acknowlegements, table of contents, list of
figures, etc.), and one for the main body of the book. The front
matter is numbered in roman, the main body in arabic. The title
page is part of the front matter numbering sequence.
scs-titlepage.sty has discussion of this in the comments to help
   you figure it all out.

This style also provides a \submittedPhD macro that each of you
should use once while at CMU.

Roni,

Apparently there's no CMU thesis style, because there are no silly
requirements for double spacing, etc that some other schools have. Just use a
report or book document style.

I'm in the process of writing, but can't point you to a sufficiently stable
version yet. You can look at Olin Shivers thesis organization and various
advice in /afs/cs/user/shivers/{lib/tex/diss-structure/,text/diss/} (but you
don't have to tread exactly in his footsteps). There were also some related
posts on the tex bboard in July 93. If you can't find them, I can easily
locate them and forward them to you.

Good luck!

Roni-- At your own risk, feel free to browse

/afs/cs/project/soar/member/rick/thesis/doc

The root file is diss.tex, and the chapters are in subdirectories. The
formats and structures are based on Olin Shiver's thesis. If you want to see
what it looks like, take a look at the tech report which just came out,
CS-93-226. (I'm no longer around locally.) The coolest thing I hacked up was
this macro to do big first letters to start off chapters.
