Subject: Communicating with (IBM) VNet users.

I'd heard that the only way to get to a user on the IBM Corporate Job Net
(or VNet !!) was via csnet-relay and so I sent mail to the administration
of that host, eliciting the following (satisfactory) recursive response.

Note: You must make sure that the person with whom you wish to communicate
(within IBM) is registered at their side of the gateway (see below).
The person in charge of this registration process is Sten Andler,
       (andler.SJRLVM1%IBM-SJ@csnet-relay.arpa).

Peter,

Your inquiry was forwarded to the CSNET Coordination and Information Center
here at BBN. We are under contract to provide user information (among other
things!) for CSNET. I am attaching a message from David Alpern at IBM
explaining the registration process. As you can see, your correspondent within
IBM needs to be a registered user so that the IBM gateway will accept mail for
him or her. Contact David directly for more information.

If we can be of additional help, let us know.

Ron, et al.,

I assume you received my message last week, so I won't repeat it.
If you didn't, please let me know and I'll mail you a copy privately.

But to try to clear up a misconception:

IBM's VNET (or CJN - Corporate Job Network) has mail gateways set up
to both CSNET and BITNET. A person within IBM needs to register, with
various approvals, in order to either get or receive mail. Once (s)he's
registered, mail can freely flow in either direction, to anyone outside.
It's not generally necessary that the outsider be registered as well;
this is only true of the old BITNET gateway at Cambridge. The new one
at Yorktown, and the CSNET gateway, do not have this restriction.

In general, people from the Research Division (Yorktown, San Jose,
Zurich) and the Scientific Centers stand a pretty good chance of being
registered, others within IBM probably aren't.

If you wish to try to reach someone, you need to know their userid and
host name within IBM. Then try:

USERID.HOST%IBM-SJ@CSNET-RELAY.ARPA

This will either get through, or get you an automatically sent message
informing you that the IBMer you are trying to reach needs to register.
The CSNET gateway can support any registered IBMer on any internal
machine, the BITNET gateway at Yorktown can handle mail to only those
hosts at Yorktown (YKTVM*) and San Jose (SJRLVM*) that are in the
CUNY BITNET (RSCS) node table.
