PAF (Personal Ancestry File) put out by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
day Saints (Mormon Church) is probably the best deal you can get in the way
of geneology programs.

PERSONAL ANCESTRY FILE (PAF) Product # 30992 (Macintosh) also available
in an IBM version. Price: $35 (Great Deal!)

Address: Salt Lake Distribution Center
	  1999 West 1700 South
	  Salt Lake City, UT 84104

Tel: (800) 537-5950

I understand they take MC/VISA for a $2 fee.

I have had really good luck with this program and would recommend it for any-
one. It really makes keeping track of your family easy and fun.

I've been told that the best one is PAF. This is the one I use. It is
a package sold by the mormons.

I think the best deal is for your wife to join the LDS geneology
library. In Santa Clara, Calif, it was $15 per year, but by joining,
they give you a copy of the program. They also have group meetings
where they exchange software tools, etc, that people have written for
PAF, and various other hints, etc, about using the software (at least
they do this in the Santa Clara club). Best of all, however, is that
you also get to access their geneology database and records, which is
rumored to have just about all the geneology records ever written down
on microfiche or CD-ROMS. I don't have any personal experience with
their library, but many different people have told me independently
that it is well worth joining just for the library access.

My opinion is that the program is reasonably good, but could use
additional features for viewing the various relationships, etc, that
exist. Perhaps some of these tools that people are trading do these
things. I do think it is reasonably useful. My database has about
3500 people, and it seems to handle that size without any problem.

I am planning on checking into the Pittsburgh LDS service here fairly
soon to see if they offer the same resources as the Santa Clara branch
does. They have a library on 46 School St., phone: 921-2115. Their
hours are 10-8 Tu & Th, 10-2 Wed, and 10-4 Sat. I just called once, at
the wrong hours, and got the message telling me the hours, so I can't
guarantee that they do everything the same as the Santa Clara branch
does.

Lonnie

If your wife is interested in genealogy, sooner or later she'll need to
make contact with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, probably
better known as the Mormon's. This church has the largest genealogical
library in the world, actually located in a granite vault carved out of
the Rockies in Utah. The church also has branch libraries throughout the
world where microrfilms from the central facility can be ordered at very
minimal cost. The only one in the Pittsburgh area is located in Greentree.

The church makes available genealogical software at very minimal cost,
essentially the cost of producing the disks and the documentation. I have
the software for the Mac, though I haven't had (taken?) the time to get
into it at all. When I bought it a couple of years ago, I think it cost
about $35. I'm quite certain that they have the same package to run on
MS-DOS. I don't recall seeing anything around the house in near history,
but would be glad to get a number/materials if you're interested.

Chuck
