Subject: X terminal info

Summary of info about X terminals:

-------------------------
Anyway, to run X at home, you need to set up an internet
link over the phone line. I think your X terminal will have
to have its own IP address. Unfortunately, there is no
straighforward way to run IP over MCN. I'm working on this
and might have a solution by the end of the semester. There
is also a guy in facilities that is working on this but I haven't
managed to talk to him yet.

I think if you are thinking about buying an Xterminal. you
may as well spend a little more and get a full fledged workstation.
Xterminals are in the 1000-2000 range and you can buy a usable unix
box (ie a NeXTstation or 386PC with Mach) for ~$3000.

---------------------------
I personnally come from a School in France where they have
a network of a dozen Hewlett-Packard X terminals (color) served
by Hp-9000-850 and Sun-3's. They have some talks about their
	problems/enjoyment.
You can send e-mail to the system administrator:

----------------------------
A sun 3/50 would also make a nifty xterminal since sunos does serial
line ip over rs-232. These are beginning to be categorized as "cheap
junk" so you could pick one up for the same price as a new xterminal.

----------------------------
I've asked the guy at who did the X port to the amiga, and he says
that running over SLIP at 19,200 baud should be just about acceptable.
Using an amiga as an X terminal might be the cheapest way to do it
too, at educational discount prices.

I'ver often thought this would be nice, but never had the time (or the
speculative capital to spend on X) to do anything about it.
