I bought a 2400 baud rate modem form the computer store for $160.0.
I think it is quite reliable. It has some non-volatile memory for
storing your Hayes commands. The best thing is you can always
try it and return it to the computer store if it does not work.

I've had a Supra 2400 baud modem for a two years and it has performed
reliably, also it is small and pretty cheap too (mine was about $150 I
think, it's probably cheaper now).

Unfortunately they went out of busness a few monthes ago, however I'm
sure that you could find a source in almost any computer magazine,
I could look in some of the more currrent magazines that I have at
home and get back to you if you want a mail order company.

Just wandted you to know that I just purchased a 2400 baud modem.
I've used a 1200 baud modem for years, and the difference is
incredible. Whatever brand you get, make sure it is fully hayes
compatible, and that it is at least 2400 baud. I doubt a 9600 baud
modem is possible, and the lack of bbs support is obvious, so 2400 is
the best (in my opinion). I doubt the brand is that important,
although you want to watch out, but I stress the 2400 baud and hayes
compatibility. Hope you enjoy it! I sure do!

[note: a large percentage of BBS systems use US Robotics HST 9600 or 14400
bps modems, while many public-access Unix systems use Telebit Trailblazer
or Ventel 18K modems (up to 18000bps). Unfortunately, the US Robotics and
Telebit/Ventel modems are not compatible above 2400 bps....

Djamal,

I bought my modem from Computer Direct. It was $100.00, which I think
is a good price, but not sure. It is nice because everything that a
modem needs to do is accessible by AT commands. This means no dip
switches or anything. Thier number is 1-800-BUY-WISE ext. 50,
according to my magazine. Good luck.

I am assuming you are referring to a modem for a PC compatible.
I bought my 2400 baud internal modem for $107 from Network PC in Fletcher,
Ohio (1-800-423-8215). Call and they'll send you a catalog. Sure there are
probably cheaper modems, but probably none more reliable than mine, and
Network PC ships the same day -- I ordered mine on a Monday morning and had a
note on my door Tuesday afternoon that UPS had tried to deliver it. That's
quick! By the way, the Infotel comes with a 5 year warranty -- most are only
1 year.

Good luck,

I will be interested to hear the results of your post for modem
recommendations. I posted to comp.dcom.modems and didn't get many
replies and certainly no consensus (sp?). You didn't specify what
speed or features you wanted in the modem, but one person was very
high on the Everex 2400baud external modem with MNP-5, which can be
had mail-order for about $200.

I have a Supra modem 2400 baud, paid $119 I think I have seen them
for $109 recently. Absolutely no problems with it! I also like the
way it looks too, a lot of ugly modems out there I know people who have
bought them :-).

I've had very good service from my Packard Bell PB2400PLUS. I've owned
it over 2 years (and for most of that time it's been running 24 hrs. a
day) with no trouble. When I'm ready for a V.32 I'll get a Packard Bell.

P.S. Mine is an external. It has the full has Hayes command and register
set, all software controllable (no dips). All setting are stored in
non-volitile memory.

I've had no problems from my SupraModem. It is Hayes compatible,
was fairly cheap (around $130), is 2400 baud, and it even looks nice.
I've seen magazine reviews praising this modem also. I would
recommend it.

I have a SupraModem 2400 from Supra Corporatin based in Oregon. It is
100% Hayes compatible and has worked great and had a great price when I
bought it several years ago. I understand that the compnay now has
error correcting modems and probably 9600 baud ones as well. From my
experience you would be doing yourself a favor to check them out. I believe
that they advertise in various computer magazines.

Hello there,

We have several Computer Peripherals' VIVA 2400 MNP5 external
modems for sale. They are brand new, in unopened packages
(we decided to upgrade).

The modem is fully Hayes AT Command Set compatible, (down to S
register level). That includes the Extended AT command set for
MNP level 2-5 control and hardware handshake. The modem supports
9600-300 bps synchronous/asynch rates between itself and the
computer it is attached to. It comes in an atractive,
modern upright case designed for continuous use, with LED ICON
indicators and a faux-marble weighed base.

I can supply the proper hardware-handshake cables for the
Macintosh computers.

Price is a firm $175, includes UPS shipping. $165 each for 2 or
more.

The non MNP5 VIVA 2400 modem is advertised at mail-order
discounters for $140.

I use one at home and it works like a breeze with MNP5.

I have a Supra 2400 baud modem, and have not had even a millisecond of
trouble with it. (Honest!)
You might consider their newer 2400 MNP modem. MNP is a compression algorithm
built into the hardware of many modems which allows effective speeds of up
to 4800 baud.
All this is listed for $199. (I got my vanilla 2400 baud for about $120
about two years ago.)

I hope this helps.
