I have owned an h19 for three years. About a year ago, I had to replace one
of the memory chips, but this was easy to do because all of the IC's are
socketed. Other than that, it has been absolutely reliable. The keyboard
has a cheap feel (the keys feel a little loose), but I find that I can type
accurately at high speeds on it nonetheless. The keyboard has never developed
any bounce or intermittent operation, which I have found to be a problem on
older hobbyist-oriented equipment. The h19 is a little dated, I don't think
Heath even makes them anymore, although the Zenith version may still be
available. If your friend can get one used at a good price, I would recommend
it. Heath has a network of retail stores/service centers in the U.S. There
may be a few in Canada, but I don't know. Also, Heath now has a new terminal
with integral direct-connect 300-baud modem. I don't know much about it, but
it is inexpensive. Check the new catalog, and make sure before he buys one
that the modem connection is compatible with the Canadian phone system.
Incidentally, h19's are fairly popular on campus. The Computation Center
has put quite a few of them in the Morewood, Mudge, and Maragaret Morrison
Plaza terminal rooms. The PC Vision lab in robotics has a few as well.
