Subject: 2400 baud modems

Hi,
This is to help out anyone who might want to buy a 2400 Baud MNP5
modem to use with the faster dialups. MNP5 is the name of the compression
protocol that speeds things up anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 times to give the
appearance of a faster (higher bandwidth) communication channel. It seems
that there are several low-cost 2400 Baud MNP5 modems advertised in places
like Computer Shopper. Unfortunately, some of them don't tell you that
the modem is a plain 2400, and the MNP5 protocol is implemented in software
that runs on your PC. If you want to run your own terminal emulator, or
your PC isn't very fast, then you can't use MNP5. Just be sure to ask if
MNP5 is built into the modem, or if it is just supplied as software, or
you can get burned.

[[You may also want to consider investing in a v.32/v.42bis modem (~$300).
V.32 provides 9600 bps while v.42bis adds compression up to 4:1, with
2.5-3:1 typical on text. SCS currently does not have any modems faster
than 2400 available, but should soon. --HQB]]
