============================== QUOTE OF THE WEEK ============================

1357) "It should be remembered KSR's difficulties with its sales
claims...were unusual only because KSR, as a publicly-traded company, had to
substantiate claims. Its competitors are privately held except Intel, which
as a division within a large company need not make its sales figures public."
-- Norris Parker Smith, Editor at Large

============================== ANALYSIS & FEATURES ==========================

1357) INTEL'S $92M SALES LED 1993 PARALLEL MARKET BY A HAIR...............115
News Analysis by Norris Parker Smith, Editor at Large
Intel led total MPP sales in 1993 with a market share of 30.7 percent,
with Thinking Machines close behind. Market analyst Gary Smaby forecasts a
$3.7 billion market for all parallel and vector systems in 1998, with vector
systems accounting for only 12 percent of the total.

1359) HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING IN TROUBLE................................59
Guest Commentary by Ken Kennedy, Director, CRPC, Rice University
Last year's Congressional appropriations debate highlighted the extent to
which the HPCC program has fallen from grace. While... smaller reductions
would be less destructive than those originally proposed, they will neverthe-
less severely impede progress in the HPCC program.

1360) CLUSTERS -- PART I: WRINGING CYCLES OUT OF IDLE DESKTOPS............197
Commentary by Norris Parker Smith, Editor at Large
In the first of several columns on workstation clusters, this discussion
explains why ad hoc clusters that borrow time from sometimes reluctant
desktop proprietors may remain the most enduring form of clustering.
