These are the suggestions I had for generating 2-column papers in IEEE
format directly from the Dover. Some of them actually apply to the oversize
mats, others produce a Dover page already in the right size. It turns out
most conference will accept this, even though they'll probably not tell you
in the call for papers.
I haven't tested all of these (by any means!), so I am not sure of what the
relative merits are. I have tested a couple, and I have decided to use
Tom Gross's suggestion, which worked beautifully in my case (actual-size
output). I had to make a couple of small changes to deal properly with
single-column figures; nothing major. If you want my changes, they are in
[spice]/usr/dzg/docs/update/26/ I found that running "newscribe" (on Unix)
worked slightly better than the regular 'scribe".

First of all, then, Tom's suggestion:

my directory scribe (in [sam]/usr/trg) contains two .mak files, xi.mak
and twoc.mak. There is also a sample .mss for both. The difference
between xi and twoc is that twoc has "true" IEEE references, whereas xi
has an ACM flavor. See me if you have problems. There should also be
a standard document type "acmmodel" if you want to include ACM's
copyright notice.

Try using the sequence
@Begin [XXX, Columns 2, Boxed]
<Where XXX is your basic environment, probably Text> at the begining of
your document (page 84 of the black scrie manual). The be sure to run
newscribe on the .mss file (scribe doesn't do multiple columns correct).

Indeed there is. There is a scribe make file for two-columned papers.
I've used it several times. A recent copy is in
[sm]/usr/htk/scribe/twoc.mak. I don't know where the "official" copy
is.

If you look at <Wholey.Australia>Q.Mss, you'll find a Scribe source for a
2-column paper in ACM conference format, more or less. To get good small-font
typography, I defined my own font families (see <Wholey.Australia>Myfont.Fon).

See [sl]/usr/mws/mss/papers/pchester/text.txt for an example of an IEEE
paper I did directly on standard IEEE forms, using the diablo. SOMEONE
ought to generate a scribe environment for this general problem, with
switches corresponding to the various standard two column forms we all
use all the time. NOTE: podtype, the program for driving the diablo,
does not in my experience work properly on the VAX, so I move the text
file to cmuc, scribe it there, and run podtype there.

Dario,

If the paper is to be printed in a large type and reduced, I believe most
people have to bite the bullet and paste it up. If you are submitting
actual size pages, then I know that Scribe does have a two-column mode. If
you're interested I can look at some old documents and tell you how I've it
in the past.
