There aren't any rally good outdoor stores in the area that I know of,
but Excursions in Monroeville is not too bad (a little expensive, since
they carry name brand stuff, but if you need stuff in a hurry they
might have it). I mostly shop mail order - I've had very good luck with
REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) in Seattle (I have a catalog around
somewhere if you want to look at it). I know others who like EMS
(Eastern Mountain Sport), but I've never dealt with them.

Steve,
Outdoor Experience on Aiken St. at the end of Walnut in Shadyside is
a very good outdoors store.

Exkursion [sic], on Rt. 22 in Monroeville, is reasonable.

Exkursion is a small store in monroeville which mostly sells climbing
equipment, but also sells camping stuff that ckimbers might use. The
selection is small, but the people are very helpful.

Located accross route 22 from the miracle mile. Kind of hard to notice.
It's in a tiny building with no parking, next door to Chin's Tikki Outi.

Around here, I think most folks shop by mail.

There are two in Pgh: Outdoor Experience in Shadyside Village (Aiken at Walnut),
and Exkursion [sic] on Business 22 across from Miracle Mile.
In Laughlintown, there is Ligonier Mountain Outfitters, but they have gone
mostly cross-country skiing, to the extent that they are closed during the non-
ski seasons.

Definitely Exkursion in Monroeville, in my opinion.

Steven,

I can recommend Fred Gunter's "Exkursion" . The best way to get there
is to take the Parkway past the first exit to Monroeville and enter
Monroeville at the second exit. The store is somehow hard to find and
I forgot the street number. It is located on William Penn Highway
nearby the Miracle Mile (almost opposite to David Weiss, which is on
the left side ). If you come down to William Penn,
it is located on the
right side about 100 yards after a Burger King and right before a
Chinese Fast food store (Taki outi, or similar), altogether about
half a mile after the first traffic light coming from the Parkway exit.

It is a small outdoor store with very knowledgable people.

Bernd
