Harry,

I have been extremely remiss in not sending you this earlier. I needed
a new drive belt for a Sony cassette tape mechanism. I ended up using
Charlie Krueger, since he was just a short trip downstairs. My next try
would have been the place on Baum, followed by an expedition to the
Sony service center in Wexford. However, the belt I got from Charlie worked
just fine... it has been running great for 8 months. (Warning to future
readers: Charlie should be graduating within a year...)

	ELECTRONIC PARTS CO.
	Bernard Hochhauser
	5744 Baum Boulevard
	Pittsburgh, PA 15206
	(412) 661-6413

has a variety of belts. I could not make an exact match for a GE tape
player, but I found a belt slightly smaller than the original, and it
seems to work OK. Cost was $1.25 plus tax.

Be sure you have the brand, model number, and probably serial number
of your boom box, so that he can look it up. Also, if at all
possible, take your old belt so that you can match it with a new one
(just in case he has no listing for your box).

Good luck,

Don

I have a supply of cassette capstan belts (I have an audio service
shop). I assume the belt had a square cross-section? All I need is
the length of the belt. Since you don't have the original, measure the
required length with a thread, and then subtract 10%. Typical belts
run about $4.

There is a SONY repair/parts store in Wexford. Check the yellow pages
for their number. You should be able to order the part over the phone.
In worst case, drive out there...

There is an authorized Sony repair center in Wexford, PA, due north of
Pgh near where McKnight Road runs into the Turnpike. Scott Robinson
(shr@opel.ece.cmu.edu) may be making a trip up there sometime soon; I
had a tape deck repaired there and they did a good job.

I've replaced a couple tape-drive belts in the past few years, unfortunately
I bought the new belts at home, not in Pgh. If no one else has any ideas,
you might try calling places that repair stereos, etc. - they probably have a
stock of the things, and might be willing to sell you one. That's how I got
mine. Of course, they charge an utterly ridiculous price - something like
$3 or $4 - but it's almost certainly better than paying someone $25/hr...
