  Geoge,

  The newest and best technology is put forth by Philips, the hhuge
European company.  I think that they market their products here with
another name: Magnavox. This company produces the chips of newest
design (duplex filtering vs. Sony's simplex) and, probably because
of that, of lowest price.  A Magnavox CD goes for about as much as
a Sony one does.  Sony is probably the second best.

P.S:  BTW, Sony and Philips are the only companies which make chips
      for CDs.
      The others use them.  That means that Sony and Magnavox are
      bound to have the better price/quality ratio.
